The myth is that it is swollen glands. The real reason is that in the months prior to the rut they are working out their neck muscles like crazy rubbing branches, etc. They are preparing their neck muscles to win fights with other bucks over mates. They also get increased testosterone around that time which increases the neck muscle mass. Think of it like if you suddenly started taking huge doses of steroids and worked out your neck and shoulder all day every day at the same time for a month. You would look swole too. So what accounts for how quickly they lose that swolen neck after rut?

A deer goes through a hormone dump like a teen hitting puberty every fall and has it cut off after peak breeding.
