I thought the rifle was a rare .22 caliber. But I might be mistaken.

Usually the dust cover is missing on those things
It was in bad condition and I'd guess the bore was ruined
I worked on a '73 that had a SN 1007 which would make it a very early '74
They were tooled up in December of '73 and ran 126 (I think) rifles to give it the '73 moniker

When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself
The older I get the better I used to be

I thought it said .22 Short on the bottom of the rifle.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I did not know they made em in .22, much less a short.
seemed bulky for a .22 short.

1873's were only made in 44-40, 38-40, 32-20 & 22 caliber. Only around 19,000 were made in .22
