I am in the process of fixing to start our house build and unfortunately have to remove 2 black walnut trees. I’ve noticed that gun blanks from black walnut bring decent money. Has anyone ever sold this type of wood or know anyone that may buy it? I have access to a sawmill I have several options for them but wanted to get thoughts from the experts.

I’d have it cut into boards. It also has to dry for a long time.

Walnut is searched wood in some locations. The burl walnut from the base is even better.

Black walnut certainly has value, but for a couple of trees you won’t have any takers. All the stories of “$10,000/acre” trees are a myth, at least for Alabama. The experts tell me the wood here grows too fast and the grain isn’t tight enough.

If I was you I’d have it milled up myself and make stuff with it.

Black walnut is a beautiful wood. If you can find someone with a portable sawmill and if you have a barn to dry it, it would be worth your while to have them cut it into blocks and dry it (it will take a long time, but it is worth it - if you are into woodworking). My grandpa made some of the most beautifully crafted pieces I have ever seen. He would store it on racks that were suspended over a wood stove in his shop. He used his bandsaw or table saw to cut the slabs to the thickness he wanted for boards.

One of these days, I will post some pictures of pieces he did for me, he was a heck of a craftsman and an even better man.

Dry time is 1 year per inch of thickness. It's worth the wait.

Unless your trees are huge, I would have them cut into live edge slabs, 8/4 or 12/4 thick and rick up to dry.

Do not let horses or cattle get near the sawdust. It's toxic to them.

You can do so much with this wood - everything from furniture, cabinetry, gun stock blanks, etc. It really just depends on what you want to do with it. Just remember to closely inspect it for nails and don't be inhaling any of the dust. As far as the drying - you can do it yourself or have a mill kiln dry it to speed up the process. I'd have to see a pic of the trees but your pretty burls, swirls and crotching will come from the base of the tree, where 2 main limbs join and that wood that is below the ground. I once knew a fellow that would intentionally target the root ball what's below the ground. He'd use a pressure washer to blow out and clean as much dirt as possible before milling. It's a lot of extra wook to do this but he produced some beautiful, figurative wood. Good luck!

I'm interested if you have any burls.

I have big kitchen island made from black walnut, its gorgeous. I had to buy the wood before we started building because it needed so much time to dry out. My cabinet guy let it sit for 10 months before building it, turned out better than I ever expected.

Like others have said, have it milled and either air or kiln dried. If your going to fell, buck to length and deal with later, get the bucked logs off the ground on 4x4s as an example and seal the ends. If you decide to mill/have milled and air dry the wood yourself you should make sure you “sticker” the boards/slabs when stacking. This will help prevent warping/twisting during the drying process. There’s endless options for you to make or have things made out of it. I had a sawmill business on the side years ago and what surprised me with walnut and cherry is the wood bowl turners are looking for. I used to discard all the crotch wood, where limbs meet the trunk. On walnut and cherry the crotch wood tends to be highly figured and sought after by the bowl turners. I say that because when you fell the tree and limb it... just throwing the the larger limbs in a fire is throwing away potential money in your pocket with walnut.

If possible, take down the whole tree and don't cut it off at the stump, trim the roots and wash the roots/butt well, that is where a lot of the figurative wood as well as possible mineral stain can be
There are a lot of you tube videos by "Out of the Woods" that seem helpful, you might be able to contact him and get some good pointers. He cuts a lot of black walnut.

Thanks for all of the good info guys. Perch also has a guy that may be interested in some of it.

Fatty, I will reach out to you once I see what the burls look like.

I had a boss that always told us to look for walnut trees when we was clearing land on his job sites 3yrs ago. He said the stumps were $ 5k a piece but he did a whole damn lot of talking. Out of thousands of trees...we never saw 1 walnut tree. He talked about walnut stumps that whole first week on the job telling us to watch for them. He said gun makers wanted them.

Can’t be true. There’s lots of black walnut around. I know of properties that have a bunch. Timber cruisers don’t even value them differently than oak.

Unless you have the right equipment, getting those root balls will cost you a lot of time. I tried one once, pressure washed etc only to get completely low balled. I said F that after that experience. For one or two trees as a project maybe, but trying to become a seller of high end walnut burl is a different situation altogether

I have a mini and skid so I’m sure I can manage getting them removed. I’ve done a little research and there are actually a lot of people that want this type of wood. Perch sent me a guys name so I will try to get up with him and go from there. Either way it’s not costing me anything To see what’s out there. Thanks guys
