Have a family member who has 15 straight cedar trees with about 30" bases and 50 ft tall. Anyone know of buyers?
I have reached out to a few of the ones I see selling the cedar mantles, slabs and furniture online but they don't want to pay anything. And I mean literally nothing.

Southern cedar rots as quick as pine. It's not worth much stumpage.
I cut thousands of board feet when we had the sawmill and most of it was junk, and full of nails too.
If it's yard trees, I would always pass them up.
That's why you can't find anyone willing to pay for logs.

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

If thats the case for what they are selling the mantles for ($175-400) and the slabs (drops) I may need to price what a sawmill would charge to cut them up for me.

Pile them up and burn them, or have them milled yourself. You won't get anyone to buy them.

People selling those boards for that price do it as one part of a business. There is a market for them but its not like youre gona sell a dozen of them every day. And by the way you can only get what people will pay for something. If people would quit paying $300-$400 for a board theyd come down on them. No way a rough cut mantle board is worth $400. Thats ridiculous.

I know of an area that was logged recently that had a lot of cedars. Good straight logs too. They piled them up like all the rest of the wood ready to load them up.........and they are still there. Loggers left.

Eastern Red? In North Alabama? If it's Eastern Red with size and is not limby there's folks that will buy them to saw.

If I can get it to post , I'll put up a pic of one that any mill that saws cedar will buy 15 of and pay a good price for them .

I beg to Differ. I've got some I have used for fence posts that have a Good/Solid Red Heart....been in place for over 10 years and still just as solid as the day I put them in.

Not sure the exact species but they are very red when cut . Located near Jasper. These would be a fairly good log truck load. As tall and straight as they are could easily make some 16-20 ft beams from them.
I was judging them based on what Ive been seeing online for several years that they would have a fair value to them. If ya just split the middle of pricing ive seen and say $250 a mantle if these have no middle rot looks like someone would easily get 6 mantles out of each tree alone and they have some value.
None of the sawmill people I spoke with wanted to buy them but, everyone of them had basically the same line of we well help ya out and come get them out of your way for ya though.

As a former sawmill owner, my advice is cut them yourself and ask a mill to saw them on halves. Once you get them on the ground you'll most likely be surprised by the heart rot and how little available lumber is actually there. I've got a few big cedar logs, in a hole behind my house, that measure 30"-40" in diameter and there's maybe 20% of it usable lumber.
If you haul it to the mill, an experienced mill operator can look at the log and determine the most efficient cut. Then you can drive away with half of the usable lumber and sell it.

Here's what a real Eastern Red cedar looks like , there's plenty more like it on the same ridge , some bigger. Those are saw log trees , not chicken roost cedar. There's a bunch of nice mantels and cedar chests on that ridge.

If you have Eastern Red like the one I posted , there's a small sawmiller that will saw them. There's some Amish up in Ethridge TN that would love to buy them.

thumbup That tract of cedar is the REAL deal. It looks like a mature hardwood tract , all limbs and growth in the top. None better that I know of in our area. That tree is on the upper edge , 180 degrees down the ridge is full of dandies , many just like the one pictured.

Good luck. I just knocked and burned down about 2 rig loads. It's a shame to throw it away but thats the way it be these days. At work id hate to know how many logs we waste. Half the time i watch the loggers waste 1/3 of what they cut to harvest. They either forget and leave them in trash piles or break them while being in a hurry.

If they are like you say they are I’d be more than happy to buy them.
