Looking at cool little river towns with a historic looking downtown area with the old brick buildings. Demopolis and Tallassee seem pretty cool. Florence and Muscle Shoals are nice, but a good distance from me here in Birmingham. Selma would make the list, but I've never heard anything good about being there.
Any other cool little towns? Wetumpka?

Natchez, MS, lots of B&B’s. This. One of the coolest river towns that Mrs. Irish and I have visited. It's like a really nice, cleaned up, New Orleans. Nice restaurants, bars, shops and built in walking tours with some great architecture.

There's not much I enjoyed about spending 18 months in New England except the mountains in the western parts of the states with the trout streams winding through the small towns. You could park downtown and start fishing and float or walk all day and hardly see a soul. Same for out west, in and around Montrose CO I could fish 9 months out of the year.
not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids

You can spend several days there to see everything.

Natchez is cool. Grab a bottle of Charboneau rum and take a tour of the distillery if you go. It’s a historic building.

We had a blast at Bridgewater Fish House and Zebra Bar.

Selma used to be the wealthiest city in Alabama and it shows in the architect of the old buildings. Ride through old town and look at the old Antebellum homes. Largest historic district in the state. See the Smitherman museum and old depot museum for sure. Ride across the Edmund Perth’s bridge. Look at the downtown churches. The first baptist has the largest privately owned Tiffany stained glass windows In the world valued in the millions of dollars. Go see the old live oak cemetery and the massive and expensive monuments to those who once lived and died here. Notice the names on the monuments and positions they held in society politically and the feats they accomplished. Edgar Cayce lived here and you can see the sleeping prophet sign downtown. Selma seen the civil war firsthand, civil rights firsthand, more than likely the battle of Mabila somewhere nearby. There has never been so much significant history come from a town of 20k or less in the entire US that can rival Selma historically and there will never be again. Selma was a massive munitions depo in the civil war, only second to Richmond and you can find all of this in the depot museum. It has a great CSA naval history. Selma was once one of the jewels of the entire south. It’s not so much now but you can still see the remnants of a once great city from the Antebellum era. If you haven’t been it’s well worth the trip. You’ll be surprised. She still has the bones to become a nice place in the future if we can rid the roaches.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Columbus, GA. Nice waterfront, nice old downtown entertainment/retail district just a couple of blocks east.
Used to be a lifeguard, until that blue kid got me fired.

Lewiston, New York, is one of my favorite river towns. It's a village overlooking the Niagara River as it flows between the falls and Lake Ontario. Quaint, nice restaurants and good folks. Couple of good golf courses. Historically, it was a landing spot for the Underground Railroad as slaves made their way to safe homes and then across the river to Canada, a mile away on swift waters.
Just miles from the village is Youngstown, which has a bar-hotel-restaurant established in 1842 and prior to that the area was a fur trading gathering place for Indians, traders and others. Numerous skirmishes and battles were held in the area during the French & Indian War, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and is the site of the U.S.'s aborted "invasion" of Canada. On down the road from Youngstown is Fort Niagara, which is 330 years old and overlooks Lake Ontario.
