Ok, so started with wrestling at Gardendale Fri night. Boys had to go back early Saturday so my wife and daughter decided to stay home. They were cleaning and doing some Christmas cooking. As soon as wrestling tournament is over, I get a call from a frantic, upset wife. Apparently she was trying to bake some Christmas Crack(some kind of candy on a saltine) in the oven and the oven caught on fire. She said the timer was set for 5 minutes and she looked towards the oven only after about 2 minutes into first batch was in there and saw flames. She turned the oven off(gas) and thought maybe it will go out on it’s own. It just kept getting bigger. When the smoke started rolling out, she decided it was time to get out and call fire department. She got my daughter and the dog out and made the call. She said smoke was billowing out of the house and she thought for sure the whole kitchen was up in flames. Fire department got there, put out fire with a dry extinguisher and then set up some big fans to get smoke out.

Thankfully the fire was contained to the oven. Called insurance and got the ball rolling. Servpro got there today and started a pre clean and a company came and got our clothes and other textiles(including my taxidermy) to be cleaned. Looks like we are gonna be living out of a hotel for a bit. Little bit of an inconvenience but thankfully it wasn’t way worse

Close call for sure...glad it was contained

Go buy a fire extinguisher before moving back in. Actually, you should buy at least 2. One for the kitchen and another that is in easy reach from the bedrooms. I have 3 in my home and one in the shop. It don't take but a moment for things to go really bad.

Only problem with having a fire extinguisher is she would have had to open the oven to put it out and it may have burned her or flashed over causing her to leave it open then we really would’ve had a fire

Any fire guys want to comment on that? I may be wrong but that was my initial thought on extinguisher

This.

Kitchen, garage, shop, upstairs closet (with a window hanging ladder).

I wouldn’t trust servepro at all. Also, check your clothes really closely. They will try to bid the smell with strong perfumed detergent. Don’t except anything that isn’t perfect. I don’t think I would trust them with my taxidermy at all.

Also, really look at your furniture closely as well. Smoke damage and smell are easy to mask on the short term.

Hopefully, the smell didn’t get into the Sheetrock.

I think it was firstteam or something like that. They are out of Tuscaloosa.

As far as Servpro. They are a preferred provider with my insurance so their work is covered for 3 years

I'm not a firefighter but it certainly doesn't hurt to have a few of them within reach of strategic points around the house. It could have just as easily started on a stovetop, electrical, or even lightning. Ask Cheryl. She lost her She Shed to lightning. Kidding aside, sounds like the right thing to not open the oven. I'm glad nobody was hurt.

I will tell you from experience. The electronics will put off a smoke smell when they heat up. Once they have been smoked up, they will never be good again. I actually learned that from my insurance company after our fire. But, I was proven to be true when we tried to use a laptop that survived our fire.
