I’ve got some family that lives in Lincoln and had the opportunity to go up and hunt with them this year. I’m an avid deer hunter but I’d have to say that seeing those ducks work the decoys is probably the most fun I’ve ever had hunting. I’ve never really been around anybody down here that duck hunts much but I’m really looking at getting into it. I know that it’s going to be expensive but if I don’t spend money on hunting I’ll just blow it somewhere else and probably have a lot less fun with it. If anybody is willing to throw out any advice I’d love to here it all whether it be good or bad I’m just trying to learn a little more about the sport here in Alabama because I know it is completely different hunting than up north.

Thanks in advance

Expectations - in most places in Alabama the only ducks you might see are going to be wood ducks and maybe a few mergansers. Some places along the rivers, in the delta and a few other places get the "big" ducks.

Depends what part of the state. Most parts of the state will not be like Nebraska. Better parts of the state still won't be anything like Nebraska, generally speaking.

I’m in The northern part of the state but I’m not expecting it to be anything like Nebraska. I know we don’t have anywhere near the amount of migration they have out there just really wanting to try my hand at a new challenge. I’ve deer hunted my entire life and I’ve killed about as good of deer as can be killed in Alabama and I’m honestly bored with it these days. I guess I’m just trying to get that spark back out of hunting and shooting those ducks made me feel like a 6 year old kid bagging my first deer again.

Don't do it. You'll end up broke, divorced and homeless, living in a dog kennel and eating dinner out of your blind bag.

Just kidding of course. I go west, cause like hunting in Nebraska, it's better to be in a flyway.

LOL I know it’s going to cost some money I’m just wondering if it’s really worth it to try and hunt in North Alabama.

Plenty of ducks killed in Alabama, but those that consistently kill numbers and quality on a regular basis have a lot of money and time tied up in land or leases and crops. Public land has its ups and downs but mostly downs the past 6-8 years. A lot of people hunting public land every single day and the birds get extremely smart very fast. MS AR MO and even West TN are way better for ducks within a reasonable drive from AL. If you have private land, can get permission from a land owner, or get in a lease/club you can control the hunting pressure and its a lot easier than public land. I'm fortunate to get a few invites a year on private land but have to fight the public land crowd most of the time and our best days on public are just about an average day on private and hunting public is wayyyyy more stressful just to be honest. I still enjoy any time i can get out there though! Best of luck man!!!

It’s not that bad but it’s definitely a labor of love. You gotta be real mad at em.

Stole from another thread....I concur

Don’t let folks talk you out of trying to make a go of it in Alabama. There was a time not too many years ago when I’d get up at 2 am, drive from bham to public land along the Tennessee river, only to scratch out a few ducks here and there. I enjoyed every minute of it. Used to even do stupid stuff like run the river in a boat by myself in the middle of the night in January when no one else would go. I’m not near that mad at em anymore and luckily have a private place I can go a few times a year to get it out of my system. I just enjoyed the process.
