What’s available, on the market, currently? I need something for a 7-08 Xmas build for my son (Howa 7-08 in Boyd’s at one stock. I prefer European glass to all others.

I don't know of any current offerings by the European makers in a fixed power. Only fixed scopes I can think of would be a Leupold.

For the price of a Meopta I can buy a used Schmidt-Bender 6x42. May be the route I take

If you can buy a used S&B for this price then buy two and I’ll take one off your hands.

That’s what I was thinking. Doug @ CameralandNY is the man when it comes to Meopta pricing.

If you run across an IOR Valdada offering in 6X42 with an MP8 reticle do not hesitate to jump on one. Some of highest quality Euro glass and built like absolute tanks. Extremely crisp hash marks with their reticle. I have had a number of their optics but have run those for years with several thousand rounds of milsurp on 16” DSA FAL’s.

if you can find a used Leupold 4x, they are good scopes, light weight and good eye relief.
if you want new, try DR gun supply.
