A mouth is a mouth but kiling a log of spots might be a bad thing on future buck population

The only time ive seen a good buck in a field, he was chasing a doe and getting on with his business. You might have a 3yo come out in a fielf 2 or 3 times a year but the old ones just dont do it. I dont even think most old bucks would chase a hot doe out into a field. I think a smart old buck will most likely keep a hot doe hemmed up in the woods somewhere. Very seldom would an old buck let a doe drag him out into a field, theyre just too scared.

I still have not seen the formal regulation on this. All I have seen is a damn facebook post and that is not legit in any situation. Whatever cave hole 49er is in I bet his head is exploding.

I would disagree. I passed the same two mature bucks last year 7 times total between the two of them, hoping my wife would get a shot. All 7 times, either at the feeder or on a greenfield. One was 5+, one 6+. Had I known that she wouldn't get a shot, I would have killed them both.

I also killed a 4, a 6, and a 5 year old last year, one Alabama, two Texas, at feeders or on greenfields. Aged by professionals, not me. I'm an amateur.

I see mature deer all the time on greenfields or at feeders.

Also, if I was gonna shoot a slickhead, it wouldn't matter to me whether it had spots or not, unless I was just looking to maximize the meat yield.

We eat deer at my house, and while we stay legal, we do shoot more than some folks might. Mostly because we prefer deer to beef, and we eat it several times per week.

Mature bucks come into fields all the time. It’s all about pressure.

Have y'all ever stopped to wonder whether or not the mentality of the DCNR is to use hunters to decimate the deer herd through the majority of the state?

I'm 57 years old, been hunting since I was a kiddo, have never ever shot a spotted fawn and I never ever will do so.

Biology or not, I think it's as stoopid as it gets.

Not every buck will grow up to be a record book buck HOWEVER every record book buck was once a baby.

Was in a club in Pickens Co awhile back where one shooting house over a greenfield was so frequented and trusted by twin fawns and their mother. The fawns would walk up to the front of it and stick their heads up towards the window. Everyone in the club respected that they were protected by all members of the club. I couldn’t imagine what would have happened if someone had killed one of them.

If you have a legitimate reason to thin, farmer, nuisance herd... so be it...

If you're that hungry, go ahead if you are abiding property and club rules/agreements.

But what other reason would one have nowadays?

Deer can be shot with their face in a corn pile now so shooting a spotted fawn shouldn't matter, either. It's just a deer.

Shoot it in the head, skin it, gut it, cut off the legs at the knees and cook it whole.

The reasoning of "There is no biological reason not to" is accurate. It's a deer.

If we want to get into the "Aw, it's just a baybeeee!" game then we can set regulations with emotion and say a sandhill crane or wood duck or turkey is gorgeous and shouldn't be killed.

Biology is what matters. The good thing is if anyone does not want to shoot a spotted fawn, just like with a doe or spike or piebald or whatever, don't do it. No one is forcing you to do so.

Never gonna shoot one myself. Just old school holdover I guess. However, I don’t care if others shoot them from a biological perspective. Hunting and fishing is as much or more about managing people and their expectations as it is the resource.

Then again , during gun season how many spots do you see ? Me ,,,, nearly all are spot free. All in all I don't see the change that big a deal

Does will eat the racks of bucks if they could. Most fawns are good sized in my area now. I dont need any meat so they'll get a pass.

I agree. But being the skeptic I am and knowing the dealings of today's DCNR, I'm afraid what future "liberties" the DCNR negotiated away from us to get this "liberty". It wasn't asked for by us. It was just......there. A non-issue. Wasn't broken so why fix it type of thing? Personally, I don't care at what age deer is shot But if biology is going to used for this, when biologist make suggestions on other items, their suggestions should be adhered to then also. that hasn't always been the case. As I said, I don't really care when they are killed. But I didn't care if someone hunts with a spear which was another non-issue.

I guess I had too many treble hooks on that lure.....
