Great muzzleloader buck. What bullets are you using? Back when I used power belt bullets, I didn't get good blood trails.

Thanks everyone for the congrats! Really appreciate it and this site has been a great resource for me!!

I've found that with muzzleloaders in particular it's important for shot placement to be around the lower 1/3 of the cavity. Unless the muzzleloading projectile hits a piece of large bone it doesn't seem it creates enough shock to anchor a deer. A shot in the lower portion of the cavity will bleed better because it doesn't have to fill up as much before blood starts leaking out.

I also think my powder/projectile combo contributed to the lack of a good blood trail. I usually like to use a patched round ball and relatively light powder charge because it seems like that combo flattens out more on impact and causes a little more shock on contact. I was still using my elk hunting load, which had the goal of greater penetration. That load is 100 grains of 2F holy black and 380 grain Lee REAL bullet that I cast at home. The entry and exit wounds were identical on this deer so it seems like the REAL just blasted straight through.

Nice buck!!
I used to use bullets made by Buffalo Bullet Company. Not sure if they are still making bullets. They were pure lead, (~490 grain. 50cal) hollow point and hollow base. They would sure enough roll a deer.
