Always have another person with you putting up ladders. At least you are at Huntsville Hospital. One of the best hospitals in the state. Speedy recovery.

Eddie, I hope you get well soon. To prevent this from happening to anyone else, this is how to properly take one down safely. Buy two 14ft ratchet straps. When installing the stand, hook the ratchet strap on both sides of the seat. stand the ladderstand up. run the ratchet straps around the tree and connect to the rungs of the ladder and ratchet them down tight. The straps should be like an "X" behind the tree. Attach the kicker and now it is safe to climb the ladder and attached it to the tree. Solid as a rock. Once installed. The straps can be removed to use on other stands. To take the ladderstand down. Climb the ladder, attach the straps just like you did before, run them like an "X" behind the tree and attach to the rungs of the ladder. Ratchet the straps down tight. Now you can safely climb the tree and remove the chain or ratchet straps that secure the stand to the tree. Once you've done that, climb down. Now you can remove the kicker and the ratchet straps that crisscross behind the tree. Take down the ladder. I've taken down 17' ladderstands by myself using this method and its solid as a rock. Get well soon Eddie.

When putting up a ladder stand I always look for a 2 tree setup, 1 tree for the stand to lean against and another that the ladder touches about half way up. Tie ladder to 2nd tree and it can not spin around. Very safe, just might not be the exact tree you want to be in.

As for taking them down, I take my extendable pole saw and cut the strap while standing on the ground. You can also tie/tape a knife to a long stick if you don’t have a pole saw. Straps are cheap and I’d rather sacrifice a strap than take the risk.

Every ladderstand I have put up in the last 15-20 years comes with two straps for just that purpose. If you tie them off wrap around the back of the tree then tie off to ladder with the brace bar in place they are usually pretty solid even before you strap them to the tree. I know some folks don't us them, that however is just plain stupid.

If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.
