Other thing going on: Malzahn signed this idiotic contract with a former university president, Leeth, who was fired this summer for an as-yet-undisclosed reason (or reasons) and scuttled away without a peep. Leeth also was there when Pearl's gigantic contract was redone despite all the NCAA issues that still have not been resolved.

Now Malzahn's working with a giant contract and buyout thanks to that former president and the Board member who's supposedly responsible for pushing-urging-OKing the $49M deal - Ray Harbert - along with an interim president (Gogue) and Athletic Director who was supposed to be a fundraising superman but probably is thinking "WTF kind of storm did I get myself into here?"

Auburn = Champions of Turmoil

From what I have heard, good ol Raymond pushed the deal by the board by personally guaranteeing half the buyout cost ($16 million) if they wanted to get rid of Gus. Then good ol Raymond crawfished last year when some of the board wanted to knock the wheels off the Gus Bus.

Kinda makes you wish for the days when Bobby Lowder had full control of the board. rolleyes

I usually don't agree with 257 but player development at the barn is lacking to say the least. And honestly to me it does look like nix has gotten worse thru the yr instead of improving with experience

I didn’t read all the replies because I’m using my phone. I hate reading Aldeer in micro. Regardless...

I don’t like Gus because he doesn’t have a good offensive scheme. He apparently can’t come up with a solid offense and relies on mostly big “bust” plays to consistently move the ball. He dang sure can’t develop talent. The top 2-3 record against top 5 teams this year is solely because of Kevin Steele’s defense.

Every year under Malzahn has been the same. Tons of preseason hype which resulted in sub par offensive play through the year.

If Bama had AUs defense they’d still be #1. Would You Bammer fans be satisfied with Gus if he was your coach? No need to answer.

Those that think Gus is a decent coach, care to guess what his record is against Alabama, LSU, Georgia and Florida isince he's been at Auburn? If you haven't thrown up after looking up those records move on to his combined record against teams that finished the season in the top 10. He's not just bad. He's a disaster considering his top 5 salary. If Steele weren't at Auburn Gus wouldn't have 5 wins a season the last 2 years.

9-24 against Bama, Georgia and LSU.

Several problems with my team:
Gus hired an inept OLine coach who was a friend and then went back to Grimes. But Gus meddles in recruiting the Oline and we have five Seniors for the most part can't block shucks. That's why we can't run which requires a freshman Qb to throw the ball 50 times. Grimes doesn't like to recruit, another problem. Can't get 5-4 star recruits that pan out on Oline.
Gus can't seem to evaluate talent at Qb so we wind up with JJ who can't read a D, Sean White who can't get off drugs and parties, Kodie Burns, Malik Willis, etc. We have to get transfer QB's to fill in. Stidham had Oline line problems and brain farts and beat us three games.
Gus can't seem to make adjustments on the fly if his Offense is struggling. If we make a first down the next play is a run up the middle.
We lose a game we have no business losing every year, see Tenn or Miss State.
We lose to rivals, see Ga some years we have no business losing also.
Seven years in you shouldn't have Qb and Oline problems if you are an offensive guru. You bring in Oline Coordinators but you tie their hands so it seems.
Only good thing he has stayed out of the Defense.

Gus definitely sucks, but the real question is, who do you hire? There aren't but a handful of good coaches out there. Auburn is a great job, but you are still coming into the same division in a conference with Saban. That's not an ideal setup for success

The sad part, he is probably about to win the iron bowl.

AU will not fire him after that.

I'm not sure who you hire. But I simply can't comprehend the likely $5-8 million salary. There's not a guy that'll do it for $2 million? There are plenty that would, and without a $25 million buyout, I would imagine. No other industry has such insane buyouts, that I'm aware of.

Alabama is going to fall on the sword and make the best of this season by losing and keeping Gus around. All part of the plan.

Bobby Petrino..Patrick Nix? ha! Honestly I cant see a top tier kinda coach that would want the job. Dealng with string pullers there plus Bama, UGA and LSU every year. Of course there is that guy that would love 5 + million dollars a year plus a crazy buyout to give it a go. I think the next guy they would get would come from another mid-major like Gus did.

It couldn’t really be shaping up any better for Auburn than it is...unfortunately for them it’ll mean 3 more years of Gus.

I agree. If a win means keeping Gus and a loss means Gus is gone who does the serious AU fans pull for? ONLY these 2 options because not watching or pulling for anyone will be the obvious pick.

There's 2 coaching moves I do not want to see. Mark Stoops to Auburn as HC and Kevin Steele to LSU as DC. I feel both will make each team and the West a lot tougher.

At this point AU should trade LSU even for Joe Brady (QB coach/play caller) for Gus. Brady is the sole reason Burrow is a first rounder. And he makes $400k.

Thats player development.
