Merino wool. I use in hot weather or cold just layer it right.
First lite, ice breaker, minus 33, smart wool are all great

Go to Academy, they have baselayers for skiers at a great price. Most of these run small by size so buy a size up.

I would have to say that is a negative. It's hard to have a hangover if you don't stop drinking. Like they say, you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.

I just ordered me a set of heavyweights and the boy a set of lightweights, hope they turn out well. Very good price.

I bought some lightweight fleece long John bottoms a year or 2 back.
I like synthetic bass layers. Fleece, polypro, that sorta thing.
It has to be pretty cold though. I think a solid outerwear is better than base layer.

The only problem I have with a heavy baselayer is sweating on the way to the stand. Then an hour later im freezing. I havent quite figured out a system to stop this. If I make it 1/4 mile to my tree without sweating, I always sweat getting up the tree.

Sir, I’m very sorry you didn’t purchase ECWCS Gen III Mid-Weight Polartec Powerdry, better luck next time.

On the plus side, you won’t fall asleep with the Costco stuff. 25’ up a pine tree in 10 degree weather, you ain’t never slept so good.

No sweating and freezing with Powerdry either until you get moving hard above 55 degrees or so.

Happy Hunting !

I sweat way more than average which is why I went with Merino Wool and fleece mid layers. The wool still retains its ability to keep you warm even when wet and it wicks very well. If it's gonna be under 20 degrees for most of my hunt I'll put Under Armour base layers on over the wool and I can sit all day. The wool wicks well enough that if i'm carrying my phone or pistol inside my bib pocket they'll be wet when I take them off after the hunt but I'll be dry and warm the whole hunt.

Only have the base layer on your upperbody when you leave the truck. Carry everything else you wear on top. Leave a few minutes early and take a rest/cool down stop or two on the way in.

I have a pair of kuiu base layers that I wear to the stand and then get dressed at the stand. It’s helped a lot with sweating from the walk in. I’ve also slowed down walking in and take breaks - seems to help as well

The drake bottoms with the stirrup and the top is the best I’ve found. Not bulky and super warm.

Don’t wear anything cotton against ur skin like a tshirt under your thermal tops. As most have said, go in dressed very lightly. A backpack with cinch straps on it is the way to carry all of your clothes

Everyone don’t get to hunt out of heated shooting houses, like I’m sure your used too.... mudpie... 🤷🏻‍♂️😂😂

I have to admit I built one of those stand this year. 4x6 insulated walls, glass windows, carpet on floors and walls, stairs with hand rails (its 16' off the ground). I am getting older and after a couple of back surgerys I get really stiff if I sit in the cold for a long time. If I sat in my climber for 3 hours in 25-30* weather I probably could not get down the tree.

Ill hunt those stands when it is milder but the house will be my cold or rainy stand. But I dont hate deer as much as I did when I was younger.

It doesn't matter the temperature, I get hot walking in. I walk in wearing a poly blend t-shirt and thin nylon pants. I strip at the stand and pull all my clothes out of my huge pack I carry. I put on new dry merino wool socks, 100% merino wool base layers (I have first lite, sitka, woolrich, and midway usa brand and I can't tell a difference). I have several pieces of the base layers in different weights, so I just put on whatever I need for that temperature and add more or take away as the hunt goes.

I can manage my exertion and how much I sweat on the walk in, but I will start pouring sweat when I climb a tree, even if I was naked in 20 degree weather.

Stay away from cotton, as it is not a good insulator and once it gets wet, its wet for hours and hours. I have a lite weight polyester type blend as my base layer and a set of polar weight double fleeced mtp's from cabela's as my top layer when its in the 20's. You can wash these and then hang them up and they'll be dry in less than an hour. You want something that will wick moisture away from your body and will dry quick. Just because something keeps you warm at work, remember, at work your moving around, not sitting absolutely still in a metal stand for hours.
