This is true but id bet most not just the young ones starting out don't contribute to theirs even though it would cost them almost nothing to do.
The minimum is usually 3% contribution. A lot of people will say they cant do without that 3% take home.
We sat down years ago and figured it up. Take home pay before vs take home pay after 3% contribution.
Even though you are giving 3% to your 401k, Your bottom line take home usually did not change, or if it did it was less than a few dollars a weekThis was due to the 3% being taken out was pre tax, and less for you to be taxed on the take home remained almost the same.
My employer does a match up to about $1500 a yr. I work with guys who have been there 20 years or more and aren't in the 401 program. They wont put in $1500 a year out of their checks to get the matching $1500. They don't understand that in 20 years if they had saved that $1500 each yr they would have received $30k for free from the employer. They left $30k laying on the table.

Apparently that common sense isn’t so common. That’s a 100% immediate return on your money.

$19,500 is not the max. Don't think there is a max. $19,500 is the max tax deferred. After that taxes will automatically start coming out. The next year you will fall into the "highly compensated employee" column and that is bad. Greatly reduced tax advantages.

That right there is one of the major reasons I believe Dave Rasmsey is a knuckldragger.
Free money should never be turned away but dude tells people every day that if you have debt you shouldn't be getting your 401K match.

He tells people to temporarily quit investing so they can gain traction with debt reduction. Once the debt is gone and emergency fund is in place, restart investing at 15%+ into retirement accounts. People investing when they’re up to their gills in debt is craziness. He’s not teaching math, he’s talking about a lifestyle change.

We have gone back and forth on this plan. You have to remember that no matter how much planning you do, life happens and you do what you have to do to provide for yourself and/or your family. Live a good life, pay your bills on time, and leave a nest egg for your children. Don’t compare your success or failures to other people, just keep making progress. Dave was a millionaire at 24 and “lost it all”. At 24, I was struggling to put gas in my car and now we’re doing fine. Considering he built his initial wealth with debt, can really listen to him be completely intolerant to it.

I owe about $6,000ish on my work car loan, monthly payment is $340 per month.
The interest rate is 2.75%, inflation is at roughly 2%ish depending on who you ask. The realized interest rate is about 0.75%ish.

Dave Ramsey would be screaming at me to make my work car loan a priority, I would tell him lol sure dude.

No. No. No. That is not how that works. You are paying 2.75% on a depreciating asset. The only way you can offset it would be to invest your $6,000 (or any amount of money) and earn a positive return.

Inflation has nothing to do with the conversation. In fact, if there were to be inflation, it would have a negative impact on your counterbalancing investment. .

I’ve told people that for years. If you are getting 0% why do you feel the need to pay it off quickly?

There are very few reasons to pay off a 0 percent loan. However, most auto dealers provide greater discounts if you don’t take the 0 percent loan.

I’ve never heard of such and I maxed mine out every year since 2006.

Because you can pay far less if you pay cash a lot of the times. Now, if you can't then sure, 0% is fine.

And on another note, a lot of times, those zero percent financing deals aren't good even if you have to finance. To use round numbers, for example, if the car costs $10,000 and you finance for zero percent, but if you don't take the zero deal, you can finance for __ percent, and buy the car for 7500, a lot of times ___ percent will end up being less than $10,000 over time, particularly if you pay it off early.

When you do your due diligence on shopping for a 650 Deere dozier let’s say. And you’re local dealer is priced right with all other similar tractors and you can do 4 yr 0% you do it. Not real hard to figure out.

When I was shopping for a compact tractor all the prices for the 0% were higher than if you paid cash. What that tells me is that they are simply getting their money up front so you could tell everyone that you got 0% financing. They're still getting their money.

Here's my opinion, The problem with most people is they have a hard time separating their WANTS from their NEEDS. So the little debt you mentioned earlier grows a little each time that WANT(toys, vacations, etc.) is fulfilled then when the NEED(tires, auto, braces, etc.) has to be fulfilled the pot is maxed out and now the ship starts to take on water and it's the beginning of the end.

My issue with the 0% financing is I HATE MONTHLY PAYMENTS did I say I HATE MONTHLY PAYMENTS!!!.

Whether you like Dave's plan or not, whether you carry a credit card in your pocket or not, whether you think 0% financing is a good deal or not doesn't really matter. Living on less than you make, saving some for the future and giving to those in need is how it should be done in my opinion.
