I guess that really depends on your point of view. I was taught he was looking for a shorter route to India and discovered America. Now adays he is said to have been a mass murderer. Every group has negative opinions of who and what he was to fit their agendas. His monuments has been removed in places and his holiday abolished. The truth is where would we be without his bravery? His voyage occurred when many still thought the world was flat. Thank You, Sir.

It's one of those issues that no one really cares about but the internet would lead you to believe everyone does. The dude made a huge mistake and killed a ton of people, was a jerk and apparently a pedophile. A lot of people already thought the world was round at that point in history. But either way he connected the worlds and I love america so I like that part. Agreed. A non issue that people with nothing better to do make a fuss about.

Every group has negative opinions of who and what he was to fit their agendas. His monuments has been removed in places and his holiday abolished. The truth is where would we be without his bravery? His voyage occurred when many still thought the world was flat. Thank You, Sir. Yeah that's mostly just horse pucky. Almost no one thought the Earth was flat in 1492. That is a completely erroneous belief. Columbus never stepped foot on the continent of of North or South America. Even if he had there were millions of Native Americans living here. How can you discover a place that already has people in it. Can you imagine if I rowed ashore in England ran up the beach planted an American flag in the sand and proudly proclaimed that I had discovered England? They would throw a net over my ass and put me in a padded cell. Furthermore he wasn't even the first European to visit this side of the Atlantic Ocean. Leif Erikson came here long before he ever did and actually landed on Newfoundland which is part of the continent of North America. Columbus actually landed in Hispaniola which is modern day Haiti. Once there they enslaved most of the native population and sold them thus starting the transatlantic slave trade. Not to mention that he and his men often took young Native girls as young as eight or nine years old as sex slaves . He set himself up as the governor of Hispaniola and was such a corrupt and incompetent ruler that the European settlers there eventually rose up against him and sent his ass back to Europe in chains. Only due to his political connections was he able to extricate himself from prison as he was guilty of everything they charged him with. The myth of there being anything impressive about this man to celebrate is almost 100% due to a deeply flawed mostly fictional book written by Washington Irving in 1828. Prior to that book no one in the previous 326 years since his voyages ever celebrated the name of Columbus.

In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
He had three ships and left from Spain; He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.

I only know that most of Americas hero's end up belittled. Columbus, Jefferson Davis, and a lot more. It seems historians today only seek dirt rather that look at the good done. I don't know about 8 yr old girls, but in those days a life span was much shorter and a 30 yr old man was old.

Got to give him credit for his marketing genius, though. He was an Italian guy who convinced the king of Spain to finance four trips, across the ocean, searching for India. Which he never found.

I only know that most of Americas hero's end up belittled. Columbus was not American and his hero status as I stated in my first post was basically created out of thin air by a horrendously flawed book written by Washington Irvin in 1828. So there was never any greatness to tear down. Not to single him out however. We teach a lot of bull $%*t in history classrooms.

Probably the most popular lie, in American history, is that the Civil War was fought over slavery. But from what I've seen in recent years, they don't teach history at all. Today's students learn fictional stories that paint Americans (and particularly white male Americans) as evil, greedy demons bent on world domination.
