I need to run wire from my 200amp main to a 100amp sub panel at my shop, distance about 120 feet box to box, overhead. Aluminum preferred.

advise on size.....

I was looking at 2-2-2-4 Al but not sure if large enough considering the distance.

Shop will have a welder(220V) , AC and heat, lights are LED

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

You can derate wire when open air. That is plenty big. You could even go with a #4 open air, but are you going to try and run this straight into the box? In other words will it end up in a conduit at some point? If so you will need to treat it as if it were all in conduit.

If it’s a 90 degree rated conductor, #2 is fine. If it’s a 75degree conductor I’d step up to #1. 125’ is no problem.

If you use aluminum, make sure to use Copper Shield, NoLox or some other antiseize product. It will prevent corrosion and ensure a solid connection.

Make sure your anchor points are solid. Good luck. Least it's supposed to cool off for you.

I buried mine cause I already had a trencher rented to run the water line. It was recommended to me to use "trailer twist" wire. I am not sure the gauge but it works well.
