aldot is not the problem, 99% of the problems are stupid drivers!!!!! stupid drivers don't design and build really stupid road systems....ALDOT does. Dumbasses changed a crossover on Hwy 11 at Woodstock because it was too dangerous. So they moved the crossover/cutthru down the road 80 yards. Same damn thing in a different place and now you cannot turn into the NAPA store, you have to do a U turn. Brilliant. And they put a damnn roundabout in Centerville on hwy 5, the home of idiot drivers. WTH?

They’re talking about putting a roundabout in river falls where 55&84 intersect. It may work good but i see it ending badly How many folks do you think understand how one works that live down here? I know how they work and have driven through several but they still make me nervous as all get out if the traffic is heavy. I think that it will make that intersection a bigger cluster than it already is. I think the best solution is to build an elevated curved exit from 55 south to 84 east. Of course, maybe the best thing would be a regular stop light. I know some that would prefer that all that beach traffic just avoid Andalusia altogether, but that would cut out all the extra tax dollars the city gets from those folks who stop and buy anything in town. No one will understand it and it’ll be an even bigger cluster than it is now. I agree about the only way to fix it is to build an overpass/ramp for southbound traffic to get onto 84 eastbound. I believe the poles they installed just made the southbound traffic more likely to pull out in front of west bound traffic

Any engineer worth his salt isnt working for ALDOT starting at $40k to hopefully be able to one day pull in $85k before they retire unless they just really enjoy the benefits its almost impossible to fire a State employee (probably why most are still there) and with all the paid holidays, sick, and vacation time its a perfect job for the mediocre. Im sure there are some good ones there but I highly suspect they are outnumbered on a massive scale.

Probably the same "engineer" who designed the Lurleen Wallace clusterfrick.
And the useless and worthless suspension bridge on 20\59 @ Skyland blvd.

Im sure there are some good ones there but I highly suspect they are outnumbered on a massive scale. I have been an engineer for a lot of years, and have a good bit of experience in construction materials and roadbuilding in other states and also Alabama. You are spot on. Add the fiasco of the Wallace Tunnel on I-10 (9 degree curve of death) and the current fiasco of a 50+ year toll bridge planned for the same place, which just recently died. Mediocre is generous...there is a certain type of individual that works for a state DOT, and I'll leave it right there...

Im sure there are some good ones there but I highly suspect they are outnumbered on a massive scale. The biggest problem is that they are micromanaged from the very top. Several district still have the district engineer reviewing and approving (or disapproving) every detail on every plan sheet while dozens of fairly qualified engineers do nothing. Then, there is only his way and the wrong way. Almost every other dept in the country seeks out advice from the construction industry and "teams" with the other departments, engineering an design firms and the travelling public. The department is a communist dictatorship.

Roundabouts are good things. People just don't know how to use them. Roundabout with a 4 lane hwy with a speed limit of 65 and a small 2 lane road merging...yep, i see that working just great.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Since we're on this subject. Who designed the I-20/59-I359 south bound interchange in Tuscaloosa. I would like to know their blood alcohol level when they drew that beauty up. AND, why does I20/59 have to be resurfaced EVERY YEAR between Tuscaloosa and Bessemer. Does it cost that much to keep that high fence operation in Fosters going? OR, was Sweet T''s lawyer bill that high? GEEZ!!! I feel a little better now.

There is several roundabouts here in Mobile and Baldwin counties. They work pretty well until someone hits their brakes.

You might be surprised. This is a perfect situation for a well designed roundabout vs a traffic signal. A signal stops everyone just to let on vehicle from the side street come through. A roundabout slows everyone down for a few seconds and doesn't stop anyone. I went through a 5 way roundabout this morning with a stop sign at each entrance.............that's counterproductive. The whole purpose is to yield to the vehicles already in the roundabout.

you'd be assuming any of the drivers have any common sense.

you'd be assuming any of the drivers have any common sense. Anyone who thinks most drivers have any common sense needs to go to any wal mart parking lot on a friday and just sit and watch. ALDOT doesnt do smart things sometimes. I can show you a on ramp elevated bridge that cost no telling what to build that the same thing could have been accomplished with 200 ft of 24" culvert pipe. The repaving is what gets me. Ive seen the same interstate or hiways sections redone over and over that did not need resurfaced while others that will beat your brains out driving over go undone.
Ethical behavior is doing the right thing when no one else is watching - even when doing the wrong thing is legal. Aldo Leopold .. (except when it comes to trailer tags)
