Going to our club this weekend to do some work. Was hoping we could plant, but with no rain in the near forecast, that is not going to happen. We have several clear cuts that have one year of growth on them. I seem to be the only one hunting several of these. My question is, what are some things I can do in the clear cuts to improve my odds (besides the usual answers of “ corn, feeders and even.....”clorox😳”)?
Thanks

Absolutely nothing. Just be there. I’ve never had to do anything to a cutover from years 1-4 to kill deer. It’s a slam dunk. Just get high enough to see down on them. COLD mornings between 8:00-11:00 am.

And DO NOT walk through it or across it to get to a stand. Get it hung and approach with the least intrusion possible.

I found that knobs on clear cuts r good bedding...get there way before daylight n hunt as long as possible they'll get up sometime

Put a tripod in it near a patch of small trees if they left any at all. Have fun seeing more deer during hunts than your probably used to.

My best tip was given to me by a friend who is a logger and has hunted Alabama deer his whole life.He told me to sit on a recent c cut of mine and watch where the deer cross the cut.It won't change when it grows up.Set stands to intercept for years to come.In my case the first year I watched 8 racked bucks enter and leave the cut at the same spots. On the east side they were coming from an Oak flat with a lot of chest to head high crap that had grown up when some big Pine timber had been cut out of it due to bugs. Also found a great creek crossing.Anyway, I spent a lot of time thinning out patches and lanes through the underbrush and set a stand downwind of the creek crossing. Basically I ended up with a spot that is on a major travel corridor and I have probably 20 acres I can see into very easily that looks like a jungle from a deer eye view.I have watched probably a half dozen full out chases in there over the last couple of years and the two biggest bucks to have come off my place in recent history came out of that stand. So it was pretty good advice.

Have they sprayed it yet?

If not it will likely be sprayed soon and there wont be much browse left in it but it's still bedding cover

They have not sprayed it yet. One problem I am pondering is that the access road is on the opposite side of where I want to place my stand. So I am thinking that I need to cross the clear cut in order to be where I want to place my stand. If I clear a straight path across the clear cut (approximately 150 yards) will I mess up my chances by crossing it to get to my stand location?

Pretty much all i ever hunt is clearcuts. Deer do not move when timber is cut. They love it . Much more food close to ground. Especiallyafter a couple of years.best advice from always try to sit watching the south facing hill. My area is all hills. Deer will pretty much always bed on south facing hill an when sun comes up an shines on them to warm them up.. i have snuck in cutover an kill lot of good bucks in the bed when sun comes up an shines on them. There warm bodies will stick
Out like a beacon especially if frost on ground. I would never go in cutover without my binoculars. I have some 12x50 that i use to check
Out every square inch of cutover. You never kmow what will be laying there an you never see. He may lay there until you leave . Also if you sit on south hill facing north wind will be in your face 90 percent of time in winter. Wind most always out of north or northwest in winter time.only drawback is most time it a long shot across hollows. 200 to 400yds but im good with that. 99 percent of deer i ve killed has been in cutover in last 30 yrs. . Lots logging in my area. Only tree stands i own is couple tripods an they R on edge of cutovers an i move them around when its get too big to see in. I love cutovers

This^^^^^ and I might add, on a really cold morning, low 20's, be in a tree where you can see the SE side of a ridge. Deer like to bed where the sun will hit them first thing, when it comes up. USE YOUR BINOCULARS. You'll find deer that you didn't know was there. Look for pieces of deer, not the whole deer. Pick it apart in grids. Your in a hot spot, if you use the wind to your advantage.

I'd walk out every clear cut on the place as soon as I could after season opened. Get on the high side of the cut where you can see in it and slip around using your binoculars and be ready to shoot if one gets up. If it's a first or second year cut there's probably enough growth to hold some bedding deer, but I doubt it's thick enough for them to feel comfortable once the hunting pressure kicks in.
