Just read where folks are saying Ol Jimmy is courting Bob Stoops to replace Gus if he fails to beat Alabama this season.

Bob could hire Mark, Gus could go revitalize Kentucky and then only have Georgia to deal with in the East. Win-win?

Is Yella Fella going to cheese up the buyout and foot the bill it would take to get Stoops? The school shouldn't have to pay for his ego and whims. At some point the damn fat cats that allow stupid talk like this to get started are going to realize that they are the program's worst enemies.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Boosters like this almost killed Alabama’s football program.... they’re going to do the same thing at Auburn if y’all don’t get a coach, AD and President willing to get them under control. For us it took Saban and it was painful that first year or two but it worked.

Only coach I know that has his team in the top 10 and boosters want him gone. Gotta be hell on the soul to know your sitting good in the polls and some even have you projected to make the playoffs and you have to hear this BS distraction.

Auburn never has handled success well, and by that I mean on a long-term consistent basis.
Auburn never will have an authoritarian like Saban as a coach, who has the gravitas to tell some booster to GTFO his practice field because it ain't grip-and-grin time. Or who can get the boosters, Trustees, AD and President all going in the same direction.
Dye was the last one close and that was so old school some of y'all might not even have been born. Had similar situations like that at Georgia with Dooley, Bowden at FSU and Tennessee with Majors. Those typically don't end well, for whatever reason, but that's how it was.
Since then, Auburn has had a little success and then it blew up like the Hindenburg.
"Oh, cool! Wow! Amazing! OH MY GOD! IT'S GOING UP IN FLAMES!"
Now, it has an interim president after kicking Leath to the curb in summer and an AD who by all accounts is a nice guy but mainly known for his fundraising abilities. That means, typically, that someone -- Trustees, or a Trustee -- is "the decider" for athletics or whatever other part of the university they're interested in. And often, that doesn't work well.
Alabama went through this during the Fran-Shula-Price era. Very uncharacteristic of UA, as NSDQ160 pointed out, and it almost cost them more time in the wilderness -- relatively speaking for UA's standards -- than they wanted. They had factions in the athletic department, in the Trustees, amid boosters, and it almost didn't end well.
Texas went through this and is still seeing the fallout. Herman may get it done but they're not "back" just yet. You can't win on tradition and hubris, which was the fatal mistake of Bama in the 2000s and then Texas, and some others (Tennessee, USC).
It's a quite fascinating study in human dynamics, to tell you the truth.

About firing coaches and all, last week I was talking with a guy about Florida State's dumpster fire. The consensus is Willie's gone, although some believe the AD will give him at least another season after this one. I doubt it but who knows.
My friend said he and his wife were discussing how Jimbo's last couple of seasons and now Willie's struggle likely could affect FSU's football program and athletics in general for 10 years.
That was his figure - 10 years - a number which we've discussed on here before due to the ripple effect in recruiting. The players from 8th to 12th grades are being influenced by what's going on. That's five years of signing classes being impacted after, now, four years of FSU sucking and probably a fifth next year. Then maybe another year or two of the rebuild by a new coach. That's tough to overcome.
That's one thing that impresses me about what Saban has done at UA. Despite having some athletes, everything was a friggin' mess. There was a vaccum due to one specific leader. Just like with Bryant or Stallings, Saban filled that role. I think Stallings might have stayed longer had Bob Bockrath not been AD and they'd had someone else, but that's just a guess.
FSU's a great example of a legacy program adrift due to leadership issues, potentially for many years.

I can't recall the exact number but the figure I heard the other day as a buyout really doesn't give the AD much choice. It was mind boggling to me for a coach that hasn't shown he can win.

Not trying to sidetrack but I guess I will. If (when) FSU cuts him loose, who do they go after? Do they have the financial juice to make a probably $30 million swing to fire him and his staff, rebrand (which costs money), and hire "the" guy they believe will put them back on par with their past? Stoops? He's retired. Maybe. Urban? Doubtful, but it's football and money. And a chance to play Clemson but few others, maybe get back on track quickly. An NFL assistant? Probably not, because once they're in the NFL they typically don't go to college or stay there long if they do. Richt? Nah.

Likely choice, but he's making $2 million running a defense instead of being HC. I think he has kids there in high school, too.
He probably could be a great HC. Some assistants or coordinators can make that leap and do it well, like Lincoln Riley. Others are better at being an OC and not taking on the whole enchilada.
Throw $6M or $7M a year at someone, though, along with facility upgrades and the *wink*wink* allowance of a year to recruit by other coaches (which probably still happens, unless you're stupid like Hugh Freeze), and that might change his mind, though.

Truth, but no one can deny that Gus shits his own bed occasionally. Good for him that I don’t think he cares. The stoops rumor has been out there for a year.

Forgot about Petrino. He'd definitely be in play. Saw where he went to the Little Rock QB Club last week and apologized for how things transpired and ended. He's doing his rehab tour. LOL
