So,,,if I kill a Coues Deer in NM (in a non CWD area,) I cant cape it, skull cap the antlers
and bring it to my Taxidermist here because AL. regs says no raw capes from any state.
Am I interpreting this wrong? I just don't see any other way around it.

I haven't had good luck with out of state taxidermists.

Reg doesn’t say no raw capes. Cape the deer out, put cape on ice in a dry bag or freeze. Saw the skull cap out at a 90 degree angle from the top of the skull just behind the eyes and again to the back of the skull. Remove brain tissue. Start driving. Perfectly legal.

Thanks MBrock, I just found more specific clarification on the raw capes.
Raw capes are allowed if no brain or spinal tissue is attached. How would
that happen anyway?
That's much more reasonable.

Some people cape it out and leave the entire head attached, which would include brain/spinal tissue. That’s what is not permitted.

Cape it, remove the antlers and clean the skull cap. Boil skull cap if you can. That's the way I have to take them in. Just make sure all brain matter is removed.

If the prions are too small to be seen, can't be killed with heat, cold, clorox or anything else, how can just scraping the inside of the skull get rid of them?

Timber, it don’t. That reg isn’t designed to get rid of them. It’s designed to keep any prion infected parts from reaching the environment. The entire product will go into a completed taxidermy project, and no infected tissues are discarded into the environment.

Serious question but kinda weird

If nothing can kill it and it is persistent in the environment, then what if I have a
NM Coues venison meal I thawed out and cooked at home in AL., then went
out to a local WMA the next day for a hunt and relieved myself of that Coues
meal the day before right there on AL. soil?

Yall making it way too complicated. Just do it like i stated above and it's legal. Actually more people got in trouble last year from having bones in meat in coolers.

But.........if you want a Euro mount, you’re screwed. I don’t like shoulder mounts - may never do another one. Euros are more versatile and easier to handle.

My son killed a buck in KY last year, and we had to scramble and find a local guy to do the Euro.

Hey Mbrock
Can you use a scrambler (Bar stock with weedeater string) to remove the brain matter, salt it down and bring it back for a Euro mount? This is how I do mine at home before I boil them and all the brains come out. They actually come out quickly and violently! got covered 1st time I did it. I guess the other option would be boil the head out before you come home for a Euro.

If I wanted a euro mount I’d pay a taxi there and have it shipped.

If I was dead set on a euro

Better bring back a completed or finished taxidermy product in that case.
