I need a John Deere 709 cutter for parts or would like to buy another one. Broke mine last week end doing food plots in mountains. I need the bar that the blades attach on.

Good luck finding that. They had three different versions of that cutter (the gear box at least) and I suspect the blade holder will be different for each one. Those were very well made and you usually don't see them in a fence row. Try The Farm Center (251) 867-7882. Mr. LaVaughn Boutwell (owner) can pull a rabbit out of his hat every now and then. Don't call if you're in a hurry though. He's an Olympic class talker. Great guy though. You also might try Bill Sansing in Parts/Service at Sunsouth in Demopolis (800)239-3423. He's been in there for almost 25 years and he might know where one was junked out.

Can you have a machine shop make one?

Here's some part numbers from my book, but it may not match your serial number.

Look on jdparts.com at the cutter. Look at the gearbox and driveshaft breakdowns and you'll see the three ways they made that cutter (early had a round gearbox like a bucket and later had a square like a box). There's three different setups on the driveshaft and slip clutch so that may be the easiest to identify it by. If you find a junked one buy the whole thing. You may need something else.

You might also try a couple of the larger JD dealers in south Georgia (Moultrie, Albany, etc). Some of them used to have a hard on for AL JD places and would cut prices pretty good. Failing that get the part number for the blade holder you need and pm it to me. I'll get a buddy to run a dealer parts locator. If they show somebody who's had one in stock a long time they might make you a deal on it. I understand not wanting to spend $800+.

Where's it broken? If not in the splines or the bar isn't twisted a real good machine shop (Escofab in Atmore is great, but not fast) might could fix it. Good luck

Broken about a foot past the blade, rock did a number on it.Do you think cast iron would hold being welded at that spot and not break, thought it might be a little dangerous when it breaks coming out from bushhog. Thanks for all the information.

Could probably order a new stump jumper to fit your gear box from Agri supply for a reasonable cost.

I’ve got some used cutters in stock for less than 800. Just buy a good used one.
