Ok turf experts. I’m going to seed my whole backyard (currently no grass) and was looking at doing it this weekend. My hesitation is that we are averaging 10 degrees hot right now. The local extension recommends late August to mid-October. I could wait, but I also don’t want to run the risk of it not maturing before the first frost. It looks like it’s gonna cool off significantly in the next few weeks.

What say ye?

I'm subscribing, because I need to re-seed my "lawn" at the cabin.

I love fescue. It dont itch me, stays green all year, sprouts seeds at 4 inches minimum though. Unless they have different types now?

I planted mine last January and it did great.

If you plant now even with straw holding the moisture, it will have to be watered constantly til we get enough rain. So you might want to wait til it cools off more and the rain gets more frequent.

We develop land at work so they plant it anytime of year to prevent erosion. We use fescue a lot. Sometimes its rye grass. Both grow fine for us as long as we straw it and watch the watering no matter what time of year. We cant wait for seasons. It does us good as long as its watered. The frost will really slow it down though.

I'd go ahead, I drilled some this past weekend myself. Keep it watered good and covered like Jake said.

Supposed to cool off an average of 10 degrees in the next two weeks. Think I’m gonna wait until the end of the month.

I just threw down 3 pallets of Palisades Zoysia 3 weeks ago and I've been watering the hell out of it. It's knitted in quite well. I think if you waited a week or two, you're going to be running up against frost / freezing temps about the time is starts getting going. Average first 32* day (50% probability) in Knoxvegas is October 22. That doesn't leave a whole lot of time for the seeds to grow and mature.

I'm no expert though. Sounds like JaketheSnake knows what's up with Fescue.
