Same here, I love bourbon but i never could make myself like that smokey or whatever you call it taste that scotch has.

Smokiness is from the Islay region. That's Lagavulin and Laphroig which are peaty. Acquired taste. That's where the smoke comes from. The Highlands stuff is smooth if it sits with ice. But I do drink more bourbon than scotch these days.

Benriach (most favorite), balvenie, oban, dalwhinnie, dalmore, talisker (may be too peatie for some)...I look for highlands and speyside scotches, if i’m in a lil store that doesn’t carry many scotches.
For blended: dimple pinch, monkey shoulder...started on chevis regal.

I tried it once. I think you could lick a burnt oak stump and get about the same taste.

Sig Sauer, to hell and back reliable.

Whatever suits you just tickles me plum to death.

Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?

I'm a Glennfiddich guy most of the time I drink Scotch. Try their 15 Solera. Drinks like an 18 and is about half the price. Drinking tip - put ice cubes in glass, pour scotch and then wait for the ice to make settling noise that first time and then have at it. Guess I've got to stop on the way home now....

I've tried several and I'm not a fan. It's hard to beat bourbon IMO for that sort of drink.

McCallan is the "best" one I've had.

Easing in from Bourbon, get something aged in a sherry castor port cask. My favorite is Glenfiddich 18y, but best value is Macallan 12y

I pretty much have always loved Scotch. From Well brands like Cutty Sark to to high dollar stuff I like it all. Never got a taste for Bourbon. Apparently I’m uncultured.

Oban..very good.

one other thing to think about trying..just like wine or beer or anything really-- see if you can find a sampler or a taster. typically comes with 6 or more 2-3 oz samples and you can kinda run the gamut . some nicer restaurants will offer a scotch taster. typically not cheap, but it ends up being about 2-3 standard drinks and you really gain an education if the taster is done well.

if you get to Vegas, there is a Bar in New York New York, upstairs..sells decent Cigars and scotch tasters. has (had?) a piano player, quiet, no gambling machines and you can just relax. I loved that place when we lived there.

I had some and it tasted like drinking burnt dirt. Barmaid said it had a smoky, earthy flavor! Ha Ha

there are 4 or 5 of us that enjoy scotch and started trying to get together every month or so and the host bought the bottle. Buying good scotch is like cooking brisket for the first few times....too expensive to screw the pooch and guess wrong picking an untasted bottle!! I’ve had a few hundred dollars worth of scotch in my cabinet that I hated and had to find someone that liked it, to take it! At one time I had 2 flasks going back and forth between a few people. The premise was “the friendly flask”...fill it with a good scotch you have/had and give it to a recipient with info on contents. When recipient finishes, they fill it and pass it along. Resorted to this since kids grew up and free time disappeared. Worked well for a while, but has fizzled out in the last year.

experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

If you really get into single malt look at a company called Cadenheads from Edinburgh that has unique collections of old single malt. Some really smooth stuff. Smaller bottles and sets. Most expensive single malt I had was 50 years old in Scotland at the haunted castle hotel I stayed at in Edinburgh. Cost like $200 for a snifter served neat. It was tasty. I think it was McCallan's. beers.

The best way to drink scotch is take the cork out and pour it down the drain.

The first and last time I drank Bourbon was 56 years ago when I was 16. I had just shot my first deer and my Dad had a bottle of Old Grandad. I drank about 8 ounces of it, and puked my guts out. The two times I drank Tequila I threw up blood- never again. I just have never liked the taste of straight hard liquor. I’ll drink an occasional beer or a glass of wine with a meal, but that’s about it. I’ve got enough bad habits that I don’t need alcohol abuse added.

8oz of ANY 40% or higher of straight booze drank rapidly would make most people puke.

I’m a bourbon man usually. But, I can enjoy a good scotch served neat. My favorite is Balvenie 12 year old. It is matured in two different cask. It is called double wood aged. I also like Glenlivet. My father loved Glenfiddich, but i never could get a taste for it.

Basic for me in my cabinet is Johnny Walker Black. I’m also partial to Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. Chivas Regal is good too.
