Anyone have any recommendations? Doesn’t particularly matter just would like a good hunt if the conditions are right. Never been out that way so was curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

It is always a gamble on the ducks being there the date you book your hunt on.

I've hunted with Mike and Lamar on Beaver Dam. It's a great hunt and a unique piece of history to hunt Beaver Dam. Beaver Dam is where all of Nash Buckingham's duck hunting books were set.

It wasn't much of a gamble last year. Everyone lost their bet no matter when they booked laugh

I haven’t been in years, but from what I hear that is getting to be all to common.

Arkansas and Mississippi duck hunting has become extremely hit or miss the last few years. Winter has quit coming South and the few cold snaps that occur don't last long enough to push the ducks South and keep them there. Went to Central AR last year and out of four groups hunting for two days probably didn't kill a one man limit between all of us. Guide said that the ducks didn't really arrive in numbers until late February. Seems that the big push of ducks stopped in Missouri and Kansas.

The guides and lodge were all great though. Been with Buster Cooper of Bust-A-Duck Outfitter multiple times over the past decade. From his AR location, you can hunt the Cache River, flooded timber, ponds and fields. He'll treat you right and his lodge is nice but not over the top. If the ducks are there, he'll try to put you on them. He has leases in Mississippi now but not sure where.

last year the southern end of large numbers of ducks were at the I-70 corridor. southern Illinois, se Missouri, and northeast Arkansas had terrible numbers. If it wouldnt have been for specks the action would have caused most to hang it up for the season.

Just over 20 years of 60 day 6 duck limit seasons has taken it's toll. All the ducks that migrate have been shot and shot and shot some more for years and years now.

There have always been the group of ducks that live just on the edge of the snow line. Those are still around. Short stopping has always been a problem. The long seasons have justified more impoundments to our North, more farms getting into duck hunting and guiding, etc.

Back in the good ole days the farmers up North would not go to all the trouble to make massive food sources for waterfowl because they had a 30 day season. It was a gamble and they might get iced out of their hole. One year it was good the next iced out and bad.

That's why all the guiding and big operations were in Arkansas. They had the food and typically were far enough South they had open water most of the season. That season was shorter.

Now.... 60 days. You can do it if you have that length season in North Dakota.

Meh, there are good and bad seasons.

Not many places can produce good shoots every day, year in/year out. Its why the places that can produce those numbers charge 700+/gun per day.

If I have 7-8 really good killing days in a typical season, I consider that average. That's hunting 20+ days/season. So do that math, over 1/2 my days are not good number days. Last year, I had 2 good days. It was a bad year, everyone knows that.

So, if you are expecting to show up somewhere for 3 days and walk away with limits every day, you have unreasonable expectations. In general, the more you pay, the more you are ensuring you are putting yourself in a place that after the group before you put a bunch down, that you can too. But it ain't a guarantee.

I always suggest Slick's for a timber hunt in Arkansas. Never hunted there, but have only heard good things. You gonna pay though. And they may be booked out for the upcoming season already. See above.

Thanks for the information but man it seems like it’s a drag lol! I might be better off just not hunting out there. Guess good places to hunt are hard to find no matter the species. Sooner or later we won’t even be able to kill coyotes or hogs because they will all be gone.

I agree with this. It's not reasonable to kill 40-50 ducks in a group of 6-8 guys every time you go.

Don't let the naysayers get you down. I guess in this thread I'm one of them.

Going to the MS/Arkansas delta is super cool, especially if you didn't grow up around there. Just keep your expectations in check. Duck hunters are notoriously snobby about killing a limit. These are the same guys that will sit in a deer stand and complain about seeing "A bunch of young 8 points and 46 does". Most reasonable people would enjoy that kind of a hunt.

Ive duck hunted in alabama, mississippi, arkansas, and louisiana. Ive had good hunts in every state. Ive also had bad hunts in every state. I have not been to louisiana in years, but I have been to cajun fishing adventures 2 times and done a cast and blast hunt. By far the most fun ive had in an overall outdoor trip. Be ready to pay up cause it aint cheap, duck hunt in the morning and redfish in the evening. The best duck trip was in flooded timber in arkansas. It was like something you'd watch on TV. I believe that outfitter closed its doors.

As long as having fun and feel like you got your money's worth... and that has nothing to do with the number of birds you kill.... you can go hunt anywhere you want.

We have a commercial operation with yearly numbers going back to the 1950's.

There is no denying this. The numbers are way down. They killed more ducks in Texas last year than they did in Arkansas.

My grandson and two of his buddies drove to Arkansas last year to hunt with a "outfitter". In 4 days of hunting they killed 1 duck and it was about the only one that was in range.

Last year was TERRIBLE!!!!! Good guides will call and tell you that the ducks are not there. Then you can make a decision. Bad guides will take your cash and watch empty skies. It will always be a crap shoot when you are hunting something that was in Canada yesterday and may be in Mexico tomorrow.

I will admit that all my guided duck hunts have been excellent. Those guys are no longer in business.
