With all these (crooked) sheriffs running around not surprised Yup - I'm somewhat of an antique and as such relate to similar situation. One of my favorite reading subjects is the Elizabethan era aka Shakespeare. The structure of their society was a strong King and everyone else in their proper place. The king was the ruler, and if he did his job and everyone else did their job society functioned smoothly. When not problems happened. There was disorder and instability. It would remain so until things were properly reordered. The more powerful the person the more effect of the disorder. If a serf did not plow a field correctly then the crop suffered and there was less to eat for the few tenants on the farm. But, if a King spent all the money for a useless war and had none to purchase food when the drought wasted the entire country then the whole nation starved. My point is the larger the position then the greater the disorder. When a county sheriff is crooked then you can bet the rest of the structure below is rotten too.

So what's the deal now? Can a valid concealed carry permit not buy a handgun and walk out that day?

Unpopular opinion but, I didn’t like it when they started using the permits to bypass a background check. It was definitely much more convenient, but the idea that someone could get a 5 year permit and then commit a crime at any point during that 5 years and still buy guns without being checked bothered me.

Y'all help me understand what the cause of this is. Talk to me like I'm in 6th grade. I think there were a couple of issues. One, I believe it is possible some county Sheriffs were not doing the background checks as they should have been and just issuing the permit. Two, there is the option to get a permit for 5 years instead of having to renew it yearly and in that time frame one could commit a crime that would prevent that person from having a firearm. So, now every time you go to purchase a firearm, there is a background check whether you have a CCW permit or not.

I don't totally disagree Bender, and that is why one of my buddy's still called in, but let us not forget what happened here, Sherriff's didn't do their jobs! Probably some of the same Sherriffs that rallied against doing away with pistol permits cause it would be a danger to the public smh

So, now every time you go to purchase a firearm, there is a background check whether you have a CCW permit or not. Option #1 is correct, there was folks (with a felony charge) that were not supposed to own firearms that ended up with pistol permits because they passed Local BG checks, And #2 is why my buddy wouldn't accept a CCW, because as you said someone could've committed a crime and kept their CCW

Appreciate the answers. I've read a few articles and have seen some opinions on here, but just wanted to try and get a better understanding.
So...when I go and buy my next pistol they won't just take my CCW info. To the OP's point - the background check did its job...6 months ago they would've left with a pistol?

That's right. It was just a paper drill of recording the information. And nothing would have been sent to the FEDs. When a background check is submitted the FEDS know you bought either a handgun or long gun, your address, SS # if provided, age, dob, height, weight, M/F, and DL number. Only thing they don't know about the purchase is the specifics of the firearm but all they have to do is request it and its provided by the FFL holder. By using the CCW permit none of that was provided.
