I have never owned a 4runner, but due to the miles I drive during hunting season, I am thinking of getting one to drive to work and take up north.

I would be looking for a 1999/2000 and up.

Give me a ups and downs, what to stay away from, etc on these.

Thanks!

My mom bought a 2000 model 4runner that's still running now and she never did anything but service it and put tires on it. She actually gave it to my wife and it currently has 265,000 miles on and runs like a new one. A guy I work with has a 1997 model and he does and pulls stuff with his that I wouldn't pull unless I had a full size truck and he has 0 problems and he has right at 400,000 miles on his and still running. Only issue I've heard him talk of is not having any AC and the rear main seal leaks oil.

My daughter had one that she drove forever, like 250k or more, and she bought a new one about 2 years ago. Both about bulletproof

Good luck, it is a difficult vehicle to find reasonably priced without high mileage. The 2005-2009 v6 is a 5 speed versus the 4 speed 03-04s. The 03-09 v6s have a timing chain instead of belt like the v8s during the same body style era. The gen 3 v6s are a belt as well. The belts are recommended maintenance roughly every 100k and cost $600-800 to replace by a shop.

The most economical bullet proof of the gen 3s and 4s from my experience in looking for one is a v6 2005-2009. If you can find one of those under 150k miles and under $10k, you've got a good deal given the current market.

A friend of mine that has a used car lot has a 2015, 80K miles for 27K. I looked at it when I bought my son a Tacoma and it is pretty sharp. You can Google it at Steve Lanes Auto Sales.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Thumbs-up on a 4-Runner!!! I'm 55 yrs old and my dad drove nothing but Fords... and had nothing but problems with Fords. I STILL hold a grudge with Ford and will NEVER buy a Ford and haven't ever.

Bought both my sons Toyotas. I'm not against Chevys as my last two trucks have been Chevy diesel 2500's 4X4 and the 2006 Chevy 2500 diesel LASTED almost 400K miles before the transmission gave out! I didn't drive it that long but a friend of mine I sold it to did. You can't complain about that!

But anyway, Toyotas.... great vehicles!!!

Timing chains are on the 4.0 v6 which is 05 and up,the 04 and below have a 3.4v6 with a timing belt,I need to change the one on my 04,it’s got 240k on it and when I looked at it a while back it still looked new and it’s 15 years old,I’ve had zero issues out of mine the last 15 years except for a/c compresssor and front ball joints

I have a 1988 (276K miles), 2000 (257K miles), 2008 (157K miles) and a 2017(42K miles) and have never had any issues out of any of them, I just need to find a nice Gen 2 and I will have them all covered. Like was said I would try to find a 4th Gen with the 4.0 in it, they are almost as bullet proof as the 22R/RE.

How big a fella are you? I found one I like, it was some kinda fine until I sat in it. My head nearly touched the ceiling and the seat wouldn't go any lower. My knees were on both sides of the steering wheel. Unfortunately I had to pass.

I bought an 05 Four Runner 6 months ago with 92,000 on it. Solid as a rock. I will be driving it when they bury me. It is the perfect mate to my 05 Tacoma. Best vehicles, and year models ever built. Both of mine are not for sale. I get asked a couple of times a month what I'd take for one of them!

Clear coat is turning loose on the Four Runner, so a trip to the paint booth will be in order pretty soon. Todd, I have seen several Crimson colored Four Runners with bad clear coat. Check good before you buy.

I have an 05 4-runner and the clear coat on it is gone too. 257k on it and a pcv valve is all it’s really ever needed.
