I have never owned a 4runner, but due to the miles I drive during hunting season, I am thinking of getting one to drive to work and take up north.
I would be looking for a 1999/2000 and up.
Give me a ups and downs, what to stay away from, etc on these.
Thanks!
It is what it is.
Inspect what you Expect.
Hunting TN, AL, KY, and IL.

My mom bought a 2000 model 4runner that's still running now and she never did anything but service it and put tires on it. She actually gave it to my wife and it currently has 265,000 miles on and runs like a new one. A guy I work with has a 1997 model and he does and pulls stuff with his that I wouldn't pull unless I had a full size truck and he has 0 problems and he has right at 400,000 miles on his and still running. Only issue I've heard him talk of is not having any AC and the rear main seal leaks oil.

Good luck, it is a difficult vehicle to find reasonably priced without high mileage. The 2005-2009 v6 is a 5 speed versus the 4 speed 03-04s. The 03-09 v6s have a timing chain instead of belt like the v8s during the same body style era. The gen 3 v6s are a belt as well. The belts are recommended maintenance roughly every 100k and cost $600-800 to replace by a shop.
The most economical bullet proof of the gen 3s and 4s from my experience in looking for one is a v6 2005-2009. If you can find one of those under 150k miles and under $10k, you've got a good deal given the current market.

A friend of mine that has a used car lot has a 2015, 80K miles for 27K. I looked at it when I bought my son a Tacoma and it is pretty sharp. You can Google it at Steve Lanes Auto Sales.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I bought an 05 Four Runner 6 months ago with 92,000 on it. Solid as a rock. I will be driving it when they bury me. It is the perfect mate to my 05 Tacoma. Best vehicles, and year models ever built. Both of mine are not for sale. I get asked a couple of times a month what I'd take for one of them!
Clear coat is turning loose on the Four Runner, so a trip to the paint booth will be in order pretty soon. Todd, I have seen several Crimson colored Four Runners with bad clear coat. Check good before you buy.
