I'm real truck poor (too many) but I recently bought a 2001 Chevy Z71 4x4 fishing truck. It's a high-mileage truck with 240k, but it sure runs and drives good.

I had about everything checked out and the mechanic couldn't find anything it needed, except brake pads which I will do myself.

My question is how reliable are the 5.3 motors in a 2001? Looks like I lucked out and got one before the 4-cyl shutoff (AFM) deal.

At 240k should I begin motor shopping? What's the average cost?

Thanks

Umm......drive it til it quits. Then motor shop. Or just drive one of the others you have. I have about 230000 on am 04 and it’s a champ

Don't blame me for your bad decision-

I just put new Toyo tires on it, and it's beginning to be my favorite truck. Anyone need a Cummins diesel?

I don’t know where you got your info but the AFM didn’t start until the new body style 2007 trucks.
Those 5.3s are very reliable. I would be more concerned about the transmission than the motor at 240k if it’s in as good a condition as you say.

My wife's 05 Tahoe has the 5.3 with over 290K on the clock...only "major" work I've had to do to it is replace the water pump. Keep driving it until it gives out, then replace

There isn’t a 5.3 in any years that’s not reliable. Stay away from cheap oil

I sold my 01 Z71 in 2014 with 212,000 miles on it. Wish I’d had kept it.

I've got an 01 z71 that has 340,000 on it. Original Transmission, too. Most of those are highway miles but typically carrying a heavy load of tools in the back. Only preventative maintenance and regular oil changes. Still running strong

My 01 Z71 has 160k, zero problems other than routine maintenance. I have the 5.3 and it easily pulls The Tugboat to the lake and back. I need to find someone who can replace the window lowering/raising motor thingy in my passenger side door.

Are you 100% sure it is the motor? .....and not the switch?

I have an 04 Z71 sitting at the farm that still runs like a champ. It has over 230,000 on it. I did have to replace the transmission at about 160,000. I sold my wife's 03 Tahoe to a guy I know and he is still driving it with over 300,000. It had to have a transmission at about 230,000. But, the engines have been great.

It's the motor. I had the driver side replaced before I moved here. My next door neighbor was a GM certified mechanic. Times like this, I miss my old hood.
