MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Two parents are in custody after a road rage incident led to a shooting in the parking lot of a Montgomery elementary school Thursday morning, according to Montgomery police.

According to Sgt. Jarrett Williams, the road-rage incident happened as two vehicles were pulling into the parking lot of Blount Elementary School. During the dispute, one parent pulled out a gun and shot at the other parent, Williams said.

The target of the shooting ran inside the school for safety, according to Montgomery Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Martha Earnhardt.

Montgomery Public School spokesperson Tom Salter said the suspect also went into the school and handed the gun over to office staff. The gun was then secured in the school safe and the suspect waited in the office until officers arrived.

Officers later took both parents who were involved into custody, Williams said. No one was injured in the shooting, but a vehicle was damaged.

The names of the parents have not been released and it is not clear what charges they will face. Williams says officers are still working to determine exactly what happened.

The shooting happened as parents were dropping children off for the start of the school day.

While the school was placed on a brief lock down, Salter says operations have returned to normal. Parents were allowed to choose whether they wanted their child to attend school today.

“It is in my opinion that the more normal the day for the child, the better,” Salter said. “If you feel that it is really necessary to come get your child, you are welcome to do so.”

Salter says the school system holds meetings about safety and what to do in situations like this. Both staff and students undergo training.

“You’re never 100 percent prepared for any situation or tragedy, but I think the system worked today,” Salter said.

Thursday was the third day of the school year for Montgomery Public Schools.

I’m in the process of selling my business there, and the wife is asking for a transfer from her Montgomery office. Bye Felicia

And this was at the far East Montgomery newer elementary school that was supposed to be for better nicer people to have a place to send their kids to.

Not.

You know what you’re getting if you don’t send them to private school.

I wish it wasn’t that way, but it is. Going to cost me about $15k a year + inflation for 13 years

Redland, Holtville, Eclectic.. that’s where we are headed. My oldest goes to PCA now and I’d rather not say what it costs me. Add daycare for two more and I’m at 20k a year on childcare.

I’ll just say the east side of Montgomery is no better. Just looks nicer. The news only gives a snippet of the crime that goes on there. It’s sad.

doesnt surprise me when i went to school in montgomery the racial divide was 50-50 or less now its dang near 100% you might see a couple white kids but they been indoctrinated into the culture all the smart people that couldnt affort private school moved to elmore or autauga. but we aint allowed to talk about failing schools being well over 90% black its the racist systems fault. im not being racist just stating facts I guarantee you a school full of lower income white kids will not have the problems an all black school has with students in the same economic class thats a fact.

Each and every Montgonery article that comes out makes me just fine not getting that job.

Macon County is a great buffer.

Montgomery is okay for a job. Just don't move there.

As I recall the popular advice was to stay in Auburn and just drive. Now you see why we said that.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Macon county is great to deer hunt but isn’t much better than Montgomery. Tuskegee can’t be much of a buffer.

FWIW, I love and have loved living in Montgomery proper for the last 14 years, don’t ever plan on leaving

It is what it is. If you find the right things to do and people to hang around it’s a good life

I'd have to say it's a heck of a lot better than Birmingham. For the most part, I actually enjoyed working all those years in Montgomery. I got experience and learned things that I never would have anywhere else. Like you say, it all depends on the area and people you associate with. There are some very good things about Montgomery. I personally wouldn't want to live there because I hate traffic and crowds. I don't miss it at all, but I can't say it was a bad experience.

People don't realize how many thugs travel Taylor Road from 231 to Atlanta highway. AUM is a hotbed of drug traffic.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the victim owed the shooter less than $50 or the victim broke a piece off the shooters ole lady.
