I got a 2008 Ford F-150 with the 5.4L 3 valve engine. Need someone who knows these engines besides the damn Ford dealer. I need a good old school mechanic who knows what he is doing. If you know anybody that fits the bill please post up their contact info. Thanks.

Dealer told me I needed a new engine while mechanic put in new plug wires and been running fine for close to 2 years now. Hope you find a good mechanic and find similar reasonably priced solution to your problem. Dealer told me the same thing. He just don’t want to do the work required to diagnose and fix it. Easier to sell me a 6000 dollar engine.

Hoggin is probably worth shooting a message to. Isnt Hoggin around Bham? He seems like a man of his word and a straight shooter. If he's close I'd reach out to him for sure.

I had good luck out of Esco auto if you are north of town, if I was way down south I’d use hoggin too.
A mans got to know his limitations.

If you don’t use hoggin call Eric at A+ auto and tire in trussville. He works on a lot of fords and is as trustworthy as you’ll find.

The 5.4 is one of fords worst engines imo.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

The 5.4 is one of fords worst engines imo. I tend to agree just because of the vvt. We’ve managed to keep my stepsons 06 running through some head scratchers to figure out but a vvt issue is death to one.

If it’s a 3 valve, I’d just do it when I replaced the engine it’s cheaper that way.
That exactly what my mechanic told me. When mine blows up i’m Considering pricing out a 5.0 for it.

I know a bit about the 5.4 3 valve and it is not all doom and gloom. I did the full timing renew last year when my 08 had 170k on her and she is still smooth as silk @ 204k. You can research starting with the video link below and do it yourself for under $700 as I did. The trick as Makuloco says is only use Ford parts and change oil as recommended.
