The older I get, the fewer folks I trust. If I tell you I’m going to be somewhere, or do something, you can set your watch by it. I grew up idolizing ‘men’ in a time when a man’s word was his bond, and there were lots of good examples to exemplify. These were character giants, providers, active fathers, heads of households and there were very few times to ever question anything they said. Today, a man’s word often seems to be more of a tool he uses to get what he wants, when he wants it, with very little thought to the gravity of who or what he might be adversely impacting if he doesn’t follow through. It’s often for sale to the highest bidder and can be easily compromised if a better offer presents itself. Society and its if it feels good do it mantra aren’t helping. Consequences and moral fortitude are no longer much of a priority. We live in a time where social conscience, convenience and consideration of others regularly gives way to various forms of bad decisions, immorality, illicit behavior and sin. Sometimes better to type than bottle up…

good post and spot on. I had a long talk with my grandson about what a mans WORD and REPUTATION were worth on Sunday.

Had a 26 year old (old enough to know better) kid back out on a deal for a welder twice in one hr. last week. First was somebody offering him more at the last minute on a non OBO deal. I gave him hell about it, telling him about what a mans word was worth and what not, and he didn't care, so I bumped my offer up and he said ok. 30 minutes later he calls me back to tell me the deal is off, that his daddy wanted the welder. I really gave him hell this time and also asked if that was the same daddy that didn't teach him to stick to his word.
I have to give him credit for not hanging up on me though, He stayed on the line and listened to all I had to say about it.

It needs to be seen here more than anywhere else. I've been told by 3 different people lately they want to look at my boat. Theyll make plans a week in advance, then the day before your supposed to meet, I'll send a text just to make sure we're still on and boom, they ain't interested anymore.

I had a run about 6 months ago where members here were crawfishing deals even after PMing an "I'll Take It."...

One did offer to buy anyway even though he realized it wasn't what he wanted. That's cool, and we mutually agreed to "undo the deal" ... I have no problem with stuff like that.

Backing out because you were offered more money after making deal, pisses me off too. I don't/won't do it and I don't appreciate those who do.

The biggest place I see it is in the workplace. Folks will go through with an application, interview, paperwork, orientation and training. They come in and work for only one day and quit for the smallest of reasons.

Many years ago, my dad bought a house and nearly 4 acres of land on a handshake. He wrote the seller a personal check. The closing attorney liked to have flipped out. Everything went off without a hitch.

I make it a point to be on time and where I say I’m going to be. If I’m not I always call and give notice I’m running late or on my way. It’s really frustrating now a days especially with Facebook and Craigslist to get people to stick to their word.

Actually had a guy on here flake out on me buying a car from him. He turned around and sold it for more than what he quoted me to someone else. Really made me mad.

Its the same today as it was back then. Even back then people were snakes and went back on their word. Happened to my Grandaddy. We should have owned several hundred acres around the town here after my granddaddy shook hands and even paid for it. Guy came back and returned the check after someone had offered him more after he already paid. It is now a prominent neighborhood, bocage, in Dothan and makes me sick to think about what could have been.
