I have a late 80's bumblebee bass boat that I am thinking of selling. Great boat, motor, trailer ETC but not very valuable. I bought it in tennessee about 7 years ago to be used on a private lake ONLY. I did NOT register it then, and really dont even know where the bill of sale is now. It HAD tn numbers and was registered and current there when I bought it.Anyone have any experience with this? I assume the next owner may want it registered, and I dont want to sell something that cant be, or will take a LOT of effort to make it happen, but the boat is not going to be getting any use anymore so it really needs to move on. Hate to see it go to waste its such a good little boat. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Jason

I don't think boats in Alabama require a title. Just make up a bill of sale when you sell it and let them go get it registered. You can also apply for a title or replace a lost title in another state if they require one. You shouldn't need the previous bill of sale to sell it yourself.

It isn't any trouble. Just have to have bill of sale and serial# off boat and motor now. May not even need bill of sale. Previous one shouldn't be needed.

I have tab into this before. Your problem is that it was last registered in a different state, so they have to have the last registration and bill of sale. You'll have to call Tennessee, give them the TN registration numbers, or maybe the serial number. They can tell you who it was last registered to. They'll have to fax proof to the courthouse. You can then make a bill if sale to match. It has to be done this way. I've had to do it three times. I will no longer buy a boat that isn't registered currently because of it. It took me a month to get one done from Arkansas one time, and it was sold at an auction. If it was registered in Alabama, it would be a much simpler fix.

Klay speaketh the truth! I bought a boat several years ago from a member on here. It hadn't been registered in AL, but thank God the owners had the title from the other state. It took 3 trips to license office and 2 calls to someone in montgomery...but they finally registered it. Now, my son has bought a boat from a guy in mississippi. Got the bill of sale, but the guy said he hadn't registered. The lic office WILL NOT register it for him now. Bill of sale isn't enough. They either have to get the original bill of sale from dealer or a title. Not sure what they're gonna do...and it's already costed him a citation for running an unregistered vessel.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Hmmm last time I did it they didn't do all that. Just gave me the sticker and I went and go the numbers put on it. But that was over 10 years ago. Then again it may be how old the boat is or below a certain value. All that may have changed. Good luck then!

That's what they did with mine in 2014 and they required a bill of sale or an affidavit saying it had not been used in public waters or something like that. But when I went to register it in Florida, it didn't have a title. I had to produce a generic letter from the AL governors office saying Alabama doesn't require titles. Then I just applied for a lost title and they mailed me one. I kept the letter if anyone ever wants a copy of it; it would have been a royal pain without it.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess it looks like there have been varied results, even tho its a state registration I imagine county to county varies. The motor is a 40hp Mariner/Yamaha. Has new batteries, new trolling motor and a pretty new fish finder. Dont remember the details, I will have to go look. The motor is excellent, sips fuel and runs strong.

Boats are kind of pains in the butt when it comes to selling them, or at least requires a lot of information. I sold mine recently and had to give the buyer, on the bill of sale, the make/model, hull ID, motor make, hp, and serial number, and trailer make and serial number. The bill of sale also had to have my address on it, and had to be notarized. Plus I had to give him my current registeration, to show it matched my address on the bill of sale and that I had the legal right to sell the boat. All this according to the Shelby County License office.

all ive ever given or been given is a bill of sale and the current certificate of registration that has hull numbers on it never had a problem just go to courthouse and transfer ownership registration. this is also why you shouldnt store your boat with the registration in it

Me too. Until this time. I’ve bought and sold numerous boats over the last 25 years. This is the first time I’ve ever had to do all of that.

I seem to remember buying a jet ski and I had to get the BOS notarized and all. The ski came from a buddy so instead of all the hassle I just renewed it in his name for the next few years. I told the girl at the courthouse what I was doing and she said it was fine! Said you can renew a boat registration for anyone as long as you have the name and the AL numbers.

The real trick comes when selling to someone from states that require a title on the boat, the trailer....AND the motor.

I bought a boat in TN 4 years ago. All I did was take the bill of sale to Marshall County courthouse and register it.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.
