Would you rather work 5, 8 hr days or DuPont shift where you have a 7 off every month and only work half the year?

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

If it’s between those two, 5-8’s. I don’t think I could do night shift. Plus, there’s a much higher cancer occurrence in people who work nights on a regular basis.

If 4-10’a were an option, I would choose that. It’s what I work now and a 3 day weekend every weekend is nice.

Really depends on personal life, different scenarios for different circumstances...id choose whatever let me be with family more, but I have a wife with all my kids here, if i were divorced I'd pick whatever suited my kids and suck it up...i like the 4-10 idea

4-10’s isn’t the question. Although that would be ideal, just not possible.

I'd rather win the lottery and not work anymore....

I currently go to work on Monday morning and don't get home until Thursday night. 3 day weekends every week (except for time like this where I have to stay through the weekend too for a tropical storm...).

All my guys work 14 on and 14 off. As much as I enjoy being home every weekend, many times I envy them for getting 14 days off in a row EVERY MONTH. When it's all said and done, I think I work about 22 days more than they do every year. Some times I like it, others not so much.

Chit, I'm lucky if I work 5 12's. 4 10's sounds like vacation.

I’ve been working a variation of the DuPont schedule for almost 6 years. It’s great during hunting season but I do get tired of working shift work. I work 4 days a week, 2 twelve hour shifts and 2 eight hour shifts and 6 days off in a row once a month. I like being off 3 days a week. Honestly I’m ready to work straight days but I’ll miss the off days.

Of those 2 the 5 8s, piss on swing shifts. I work a 9-80 schedule, 4 9s and a 8 one week and 4 9s the next with a 3 day weekend everyother week. I'd rather work 4 10s though.

I prefer my current schedule. Go to bed when I want, wake up when I want, do what I want, go where I want and drink on the job.

I’ve been on what I guess would be considered 5-8s for the past decade as a service tech. Most of the time there was longer than 8 hr days and plenty of weekends worked being on call or being called out at night.

I’m now working in a large data center on 5-8s until operations start. At that point with it being a critically cooled environment it’s 24/7 operation/monitoring. We’ll be working a 4on 4off shift rotating from nights to days every other month For the first several months or so until we get who’s going to be our night shift guys in the rotation. Then it’ll be just days of 4on 4off.

I’m interested in how it all goes. Definitely a change from what I’ve been use to.

I have a feeling once in the swing of things I’d vote for the more days off. Especially during hunting season.

Seriously we need to hang out soon. We are not far from each other. You are my new Mentor. Don’t have an old one but you are my new one.
I work mostly 4-10s. That’s a lacks schedule most of the time but it ramps up and shifts a lot sometimes. If I had a “normal” job. I Would probably like 14 on 14 off. Maybe not. I still vote for retire and work for myself!!just need to find a nitch.

Don't blame me for your bad decision-

I went through Deatsville last Saturday. I got some hunting land near Lake Jordan.

I work the DuPont schedule and have told my boss if they ever change the schedule I will be looking for another job. I live and work in Baton Rouge but I spend 7 days a month in Alabama from September through April. Now we flip back and forth from days to nights every other set but it still is the best schedule I ever worked. I am the only person out in the woods, Marsh, or river fishing and hunting during the week. I get to spend a lot of time with my family. Yea I work weekends but it’s worth it to me. I can take 48 hours of vacation and be off for 14 days! That’s the best part.

It’s not good for you long term for sure. I should be able to move into a straight day job in a year or two and I’ll be glad to give up the shift work.

Dupont schedule, no question about it
I have worked shift work since 99 and it doesn't bother me one bit. I would actually rather work nights. I put in for a straight days mechanical maintenance job (4 10s) back in '14 and got it. It has had it's ups and downs...I think I have actually been back on rotating shift more than straight days due to guys quitting and having to fill in for the empty operations shift I wound up making more hourly, but lost money due to not getting built in OT.
We worked the DuPont schedule at a previous employer and worked it for several years. Management changed and the O&M Manaer that took over didn't like the schedule as it allowed someone to take "vacation" without using vacation days (we could roll over unused vacation), and he figured it up and saw that we were only working about 1/2 of the year, and was still making more than he was. Being the plant only ran about 5 months out of the year, when the plant wasn't running he wanted us to work 5 8 hour shifts. We raised holy hell with him about it as we'd actually wind up losing money...5 8's or 4 10's is the same amount of hours, but you have to drive the 5th day, costing you money.

The only set schedule I've ever had was the traditional 8-5 M-F. Haven't done that since 2004. I only try to work Monday-Friday...but not uncommon for me to work from home in the evening and some on the weekends doing office stuff. I don't have a set hourly schedule. Some weeks 30 hours and some 70 hours. Just depends.

I work from the office some, on the road a lot, and from home. Family business so very flexible. Some days start at 4am...some days end at 4am. When possible I schedule work to avoid Birmingham rush hours (plural). I've only missed my boys playing a ballgame twice in 8 years....all because I was sick as death.

I work until I get enough done then I stop...if I'm not at home already then I go home.
Or
I travel for a few days and then work from home a bunch
Or
If I need a day off or time off then I just schedule it....I might work 8am to noon, take off til 8pm, then work from home until midnight.

I don't think I could ever do a set schedule but the thought of 14 days off in a row could make me change my mind.

Outback wins, hands down.

...failing that, I have a love/hate relationship with my schedule...28 days on, 12 hours a day, then 28 days off. Only working half the year is great...missing half the year at home sucks.
