Mobile Al,
Does anyone else own this rifle? I like the looks of it but I've heard bad things about Remington's not shooting well out of the box. I've thought about buying a 6.5 but for the life of me I can't understand the hype!! when it comes to DEER HUNTING 400 yds and in, the 6.5 cm is out performed in ballistics, energy, MV, trajectory etc. by almost all common calibers besides the .243 .223 and a few other smaller calibers. I get its a better long range target gun, but as far as deer hunting, how is it better?????? What the heck am I missing?? Are people just playing into the hype???

It isn’t any “better” for the application you described than a lot of the common calibers. But run the numbers with a 120gr bullet and it isn’t really any worse than the others either. Where is really shines IMO is the relatively mild recoil and availability of relatively cheap match ammo. The accuracy combined with low recoil and cheap ammo encourage folks to shoot more which translates into less wounded deer.

You're only as good as your worst shot-

.264 projectiles are long for caliber the hypesters behind the Creed exploited this. Nothing new under the sun yes the Creed is "more efficient" than the .264 win mag but add 26 inch Barrell slow burning powder and Wins .264 will tote a bigger hammer than the Creed.

Only hits count.

I have Remington 5R SS with the HS Precision stock chambered in 308. Shoots sub MOA and no flies on that cartridge and you don't have to wear skinny jeans to shoot it. 😀

You aren't missing anything. It's a .260. And before that we called it a 6.5-08 A-Square. It's been around a long time. Never was all that but just a good solid caliber somewhere in the middle. Similar to 7-08. Just a solid choice.

But consider ballistics live on paper. In the real world, yea, it's way better than a pea shooter shooting tiny bullets. The 6.5 shooting 140's will easily kill a whitetail with some determination. And you don't have to rely on tiny magical bullets that allegedly hold together but also at the same time mysteriously defy physics somehow creating football size wound channels, break bones and practically gut a deer where it is standing? You can skip all that and just shoot whatever ammo you want with the 6.5 cm.

Mines a shooter its a .308 5R. do yourself a favor and throw the xmark trigger in the trash and drop in a timney adjusted down to about 2.5lbs. the actions arent bad but the new lawyer approved triggers are terrible.

This. The xmark is adjustable to a fairly light break, but it's all over the place. The most inconsistent trigger I've ever felt. If you plan on buying a Remington, budget in another $150 for a Timney.

It's not that it's so much better than everything else. It's that for that situation you describes, nothing else is really better. You can argue more energy with other calibers but you don't need more energy and those calibers do have the drawbacks. Some don't have as good a bullet selection. Some will burn up barrels faster. Some recoil a lot more. Some are only long action calibers which is fine for here but if you are building an ultralight rifle to climb a mountain,it's not what you want.

The 6.5 Creed is so popular not because it is the best,at any one thing but because it checks all the boxes that are really positive things in a medium to long range deer caliber.

Id stay with a .30 caliber offering, alot more options if you reload and like you already said we are talking about deer not a match competition at 1000 meters. .308 is perfect for inside 400. .30 caliber is a proven caliber whether it sits on a .308 case, 30-06, or a 300WinMag. I dont buy into all the fads trying to redesign the wheel. after they pass and everyone moves onto the next best cartridge all tge .30 caliber rounds will still be around and affordable like they always have been.

I tend to agree with that. It's really hard to beat just the standard issue .308 for a deer rifle. I shoot a lot of 6.5's in particular 6.5x284 that's my go-to. One of my workhorse deer rifles is a .25-06.

But, make the same good shoot on a deer with a .35 Whelen and tell me what happens. Look at it this way... if you like the excitement of following a blood trail, then maybe that caliber isn't for you. Killing something with authority.... That doesn't show up on a piece of paper or in a ballistics app on your phone. But it's real.

A .308 with a 165 Sierra with flat out clean a deer's clock and has been doing so for 60 years now. Want to kill it "deader"? Shoot a 180 grain. Don't buy into all the fads trying to redesign the wheel. It's unnecessary.

It's necessary if your the manufacturer and you want to stay in business. And if arm instinctively reaches for your wallet every time you walk in a gun store like happens to some of us. We just like to buy new chit so we can find out for ourselves if the hype is real or BS.

C'est la vie...

6.5Creedmoor is just a 6.5X55 Swede from 1895 but in the 21st century with a great marketing team & PR agency.

Not really. Does it fit well in short actions with room for longer better BC bullets?

Oh,and I hunt with a 270 and 7mm-08. I'm just not old and against anything I don't understand.

I'm only old to some, and I absolutely understand the 6.5 creedless "logic", if you are trying to target shoot long range and don't want .300 Win Mag recoil. Lots of those guys are also moving to 6mm Dasher as well.

Point is, inside 400 to 500 yards, the creed doesn't do one flippin' thing that 7mm-08, .308, .260 Rem, 6.5 Swede, and a host of others don't do just as well. Beyond that, where the long for caliber, high BC bullets really make a difference, it is just not up to par for a hunting round. If you wouldn't shoot a deer with a .30-30 at 250-300 yards, then you don't need to be trying the creed at 600 plus.

Main point is, 6.5 creed is so popular because it is trendy, and a bunch of Tommy Tactical types just ate all that "snipery" crap up. If you like yours, well, good for you. I looked at it years ago when it first came out, and I'll stick with a .260 or a 7mm-08 in that class of cartridge. And you don't have to wear skinny jeans to shoot a .260 Rem or a .308.

Also - In the price range of the Remington rifle mentioned here, you are easily into a Tikka or Kimber that has more features and generally better accuracy out of the box.

yeah but once you have that 700 action in that stock youve got a good base to build on alot more aftermarket stuff for the 700

And you will need to build it.

Kimber needs nothing to be ideal. Tikka needs new bottom metal (instead of plastic) and a Timney trigger to be able to cycle the bolt on safe. Net cost for both is still less than the Remington.

I used to be a huge Remington fan. But now, in their price point, they aren't even close to the top. And for a few hundred more, you are in Christensen, Nosler, or Montana territory. You can't build a Remington to that level for anywhere close to that price. Before Cerberus, sure. But not today.
