Well... I apparently have a torn ACL and a torn meniscus. I guess things like this happen when a fat boy tries to stop too fast playing basketball. I am scheduled to have surgery on the 9th of July. From those who have had an ACL repair done, what do I have to look forward to recovery wise? This will actually be the first type of surgery I have undergone.

I've had a few friends that have had it, one on both knees. I think the first few days post op kinda sucks, but then it's just rehab and rehab.

I snapped my ACL into and tour my left MCL i think they called it. Had two surgeries cause the first graph didn't hold. The surgery is nothing to it. The post rehab is kinda pain full when they start to stretch the ACL so you have full range of motion. Try and do as much straight leg workouts as you can. Ie laying on back lift leg 6" and hold 10 sec. then repeat 3 cut of 10 each on these, then on you left side right side and laying on stomach. Only do this if you can. Maybe see a physical therapist for a pre surgery workout plan. This will help with leg muscle loses while they have you locked after the surgery. These are the same workouts that you'll do in post op PT to build your leg back up. More you able to do now less you'll have to do then, if it is possible to do any now. For me I could not as the ACL was broken into and my knee joint just flopped around. I'd also say the inner thigh muscle is the hardest to work.

The surgery isn't bad. If they give you the little pump bag that you have to release (pulls blood off the ligament area internally) make sure to take your pain pills before you pull it out..... the straw is a lot longer than you expect. Do the rehab exactly like they tell you.... it sucks out loud but you'll regret it the rest of your life if you don't. The worst workout I remember was rolling myself in an office chair. I wanted to kill the PT. Ice and stim becomes the best part of your day, your quads are going to be on fire for the next few months. Don't plan on walking over rocky terrain this hunting season, give it time.

I had a couple of meniscus tears and an ACL tear in my right knee. I had surgery back on April 19th. It isn’t very fun, especially the rehab. I was off work for 7 weeks. I did PT 3 times a week for 4 weeks and 2 times a week the other 3. It’s still a little sore and stiff.

I’ve got an appointment with the surgeon about my left knee this afternoon. I had it scoped 12 years ago for a meniscus tear. One day after PT on my 5th week it started bothering me bad. Finally went for an MRI last week on it. I’ve got a complete tear of the posterior horn on the medial meniscus and cartilage loss causing bone to bone contact. I also have suspected ACL tear in it.

Tore mine the end of football season my senior year. Therapy was pretty rough at times. We were trying to get me back ready for baseball in the spring so we rehabbed it pretty hard. The worst though by a long shot was everyday right before ice and stim they’d lay me on my stomach and try to make my heel touch my butt. I thought my knee was going to explode every time.

Had both knees done and the right ACL done twice. The surgery itself is not bad, about six weeks recovery. Pain all depends on your pain tolerance level. If you don’t like much pain, you may have some difficulties. Rehab to me has always been the worst part. Take pain meds before you go to physical therapy. Ice will be your best friend for a while. For god sakes make sure you do your rehab. Good luck with it.

I don't see how you guys had only 6 weeks to recover. My son did his playing football, and he did accelerated rehabbed at Andrews every day for months and it was 4 months before they released him to play baseball and he still wasn't anywhere near 100%.

not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids

Thanks fellas. I figured the rehab would be the worst of it. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but I am sure therapy is going to test the limits of that. Since I sit at a desk all day, doctor thinks I can get back to work about a week after surgery, but I'll have to see on that.

I’m not 100% and definitely in no shape to play baseball. laugh

To play sports that is probably correct. But back to somewhat normal activity 6weeks or so. I was back at work ona desk job the week after with no real issues.

When I tore mine I had surgery the first week of November and pitched our first game mid February. Think I went 4 innings. I wasn't 100% though and honestly probably pushed it too hard too soon, but it was my senior year.

thats exactly what my son did his junior year. He was lead off and played CF, they relied on his running and sliding and he couldn’t do it efficiently. He basically missed most of the season and there went his potential college baseball career. He played his senior season both sports but it was still a hindrance then.

Just found out from the surgeon that I’ve got to have ACL reconstruction on my other knee as well. They’re doing it on July 19, three months after the other one.

I completely tore my ACL and partially tore my MCL almost 7 years ago. No surgery yet, but I am sure one day it is coming. Nothing I have read above makes me want to run out and get surgery anytime soon lol.
