“Useless” is a joke. My favorite episode was when his truck rolled off and wrecked. Marty is also a joke. You don't make enough, to buy and maintain an airplane, by trapping squirrels. He may not make a lot of money but he’s probably the most skilled woodsman of all of them on the show. Marty was the cover article of a Field and Stream issue, I believe in 2013. In that article, it said he worked summers as a smoke jumper fighting fires. It also said he was especially skillful at rigging supplies on pallets to be dropped in to fire zones. At least at that time, his summer job paid for his winter job. In either case, he appears to be a skilled outdoorsman.

It’s a stupid show and I don’t normally watch it but I had it on for noise last night. I saw the big cat and it caught my eye. Then I saw the part of the show where Shaggy blew up the moonshine still and new it was just as fake as the rest of the shows on TV
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Those mountain lion segments get on my nerves.
Hey, we have this my lion killing this guys livestock. Let’s load up our beagles and hounds with 40 thousand dollars worth of tracking collars and chase it from tree to tree for 15 miles in the hopes that it won’t come back.
Me: That sounds like a great idea but how about this as an alternative. Let’s let the dogs tree it close to the truck and let’s slip up there and shoot that worthless POS in the face with a rifle and then it won’t be back for sure. Then we can go home and throw some steaks on the grill and chill. You know? He may actually be doing as portrayed on the show. Think about it for a moment. Mountain lions are probably not very prolific breeders and they tend to have large territories. A big dummy goes in there and thins them out pretty quickly and makes a ton of money for his service to the local ranchers. The next 10 years he gets a call here and there but mostly sits by the phone waiting for someone to have a lion problem. Meanwhile his dogs grow old and rusty. Or, he could release every lion and keep his dogs running. Not to mention what the guy is making from the show and the name recognition it brings with it. That's worth something no matter what your business.

After watching the episode, I laugh at how Eustace is going to pay for the new land he put a down payment on by cutting timber off same new land. So he puts money down on land then cuts trees off same land to pay for same land. Nice plan to cut trees off his new land to pay for it. I'd hate to have him as a neighbor. Only way I'd sell him land is with full cash payment. What a scammer. He made a down payment and entered into a mortgage agreement. Unless the timber rights were excluded in that agreement, then he can legally cut all the timber he wants. It's his land until he fails to meet the mortgage requirements.

What I'm impressed with is how the guy runs up the side of those mountains like he's out for an afternoon jog. have to be in great shape to do that. I train for a few months to be up in that country 3 weeks and it still gets to me
When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself The older I get the better I used to be

TOM is my favorate, hes bout as old as iam, and walks a lot like me !!!! I was wondering how much longer Tom and Nancy could keep up their tough lifestyle. I doubt if I could handle it, and Tom is more than 20 years older than me. But I really hate to hear they retired to Florida. They'll both be miserable in Florida.

He just traps in trapping season. I would assume he dont just sit on the couch hanging out on hunting forums the other 9months out of the year. 90% of us would be dead if we tried to do what he does.

You're right. He probably has two or three jobs. I guess joke wasn't the best term, but I've often wondered how he maintains the airplane and snowmobiles.

If you notice on all those alaska shows the people have a bunch of expensive crap sitting around. A couple years into the show theyll have new shiny expensive crap, I know the show paid for that stuff but I dont know how someone living a subsistence lifestyle could afford the things they have. I think hollywood is just spinning it a certain way and thats not how it really is. One things for sure, making a living on the land 40below zero would be hard. I heard somebody on one of those shows say "there aint no food stamps up here, you gotta make it on your own"' I wonder if thats really true?

It's his land until he fails to meet the mortgage requirements. not sure it works in NC or where ole Eustace lives, but in AL timber is attached to the land and any mortgage attached thereto. the timber rights would have to be "released" from the mortgage for the timber to be legally harvested. this law keeps yahoos (crooks) from taking out a loan on a tract with timber or minerals etc, extracting / harvesting same and then defaulting on the loan and walking away with the $$ for the natural resource

Tom has a brother that lives in Florida and has been trying to get him to move there. There was an episode or two a few years back that dealt with Tom and Nancy visiting them for part of the winter. I mentioned earlier that Marty is a smoke jumper in the non-trapping months. FWIW, his brother lives near by and is an airplane mechanic. That can't hurt the cost of owning a plane.

Alaska has no income tax, and full time residents each receive a dividend check from the AK gov. every year. According to the AK folks I know, that helps put/keep a lot of people in planes. Of course those people are living a different lifestyle than we do here, and don’t have a lot of the everyday expenses we have eventhough most things cost more. I had a friend lived in Alaska. He said everyone gets $800 a year to live up there. Once a year. That's what he always told me. And he said a gallon of milk is $8 in the bigger towns surrounding the boon docks. I dont know if these are facts. I did have a police officer from Alaska tell me the $800 a year was true. And it was outrageous to buy anything up there if you get off a main city area. And drug use was rampant. He always said, most came to Alaska to avoid people and do what they want to do. No rules type folks. With all these shows its ruining the country life. Same way with social media ruining Bankhead and Guntersville lake. Too much pressure changes everything.
