It all boils down to getting what satisfies you.
To each his own. Not necessarily talking type
of vehicle, but the right deal.
Until I retired, I saved various amounts to apply
for buying my next vehicle. With trade-in or
outright selling, I usually came out OK. I was
drawing interest instead of paying it.
And lots of those investment analysts had us in
a depression for the last 9 months.
Reckon how many of those folks buy used cars?
Warren Buffett probably doesn't drive much.

I was looking to get my son a newer, used Tacoma but my mechanic, whom I trust implicitly, said the newer ones (after '15) are having more trouble than the older ones. This really stuck with me because I think I've seen some on Aldeer say the same thing.

I doubt this is an issue for you but it was to me. Getting a Tacoma and putting it on our insurance with him as the primary driver would add $161/mos to my bill. To compare, a jeep wrangler, which I would do if I found one I like, would only add a little over $100 to my bill. They said that is because of the high resale value on the Tacoma if it totaled.

Thankfully, a friend has a Jeep Grand Cherokee that he likes since it is 4wd and has mud grip tires so that is probably the most doable for us.

Nope , historically Nissan is worse. Don't know bout newer models , but Nissan's mileage always sucked , both trucks and cars.

I get the economic impact of the Jeep for the insurance savings, but it certainly is worse in reliability even compared to the newer Tacomas.

I can buy a real nice truck from between 6K-15K,just depending on what I need. I'm still driving my last 6K tuck 10 years later and still driving my last 15K truck 7 years later.

The only reason to spend 30K plus on a truck is to look good, and iIm all for it as long as it isn't your biggest expense and your retirement plan.LOL

Whew doggy! I feel great , my 2014 Taco 4x4 extended cab , 4 cylinder came in much less than 30K and my retirement account is fat and happy.

Saving $61 a month on your insurance to put your son in a Jeep versus a Tacoma is not a good idea in my book. Reduced maintenance and repair costs (which can be SIGNIFICANT if the Jeep has a lot of miles or hard use) and the better resale on the Tacoma will make it a much better deal financially in the long run (IMHO). Good luck with whatever you do. Would you buy a Hyundai car instead of a Honda because you could save $61 per month?

What kind of investment is your hunting club lease?
What net after tax return do you get from your Dish Network bill so you can watch football or other tv? Library is free. Millions of good books there.
How much money could you save on food buying beans and rice and basa fish and never eat out or cook a steak?

Truck isn't a good investment. No shucks Sherlock. REALLY?

Neither are boats, rifles, tractors, mowers, nice clothes or any damn other thing he, I or any other free American decides to spend his money on.

Sit on your piles of cash Scrooge McDuck and enjoy your Jeremiah Johnson lifestyle. I'll take my kids to Disney World when I want, buy the truck I want and I won't be eating cat food when I retire. I work to earn the money I make and I fully intend to enjoy it. If I could live happy on $10k a year I'd get a job as a school crossing guard or Wal Mart greeter.

The wanna be Dave Ramsey/nosey mother in laws here amaze me at the level of "I'm the only one who knows shucks and the rest of you are dumbasses if you don't agree with me" that permeates this place.

I wonder what percentage of these people that follow the Dave ramsey like plans actually realize the goals they have and how many get to enjoy it. I’m kinda on the fence. I stay away from as much debt as possible but in real life working a normal job raising a family it’s almost unavoidable.

Right? What's RIGHT? Seriously Clark?

What's right is to be kind to strangers and animals. What's right is to say yes sir, no sir, please and thank you. What's right is to give up your seat on the Disney bus so the lady, older person or child can sit down.

What makes financial sense and what's right are two different things. You have an OPINION. God didn't give you a stone tablet on the mountaintop with the Ten Commandments of fiscal responsibility.

titan mileage sucks as bad as tundra and has in both generations of titan.

FYI: I've been reading forums about the timing chain cover and cam tower leaks (approx. $3000+ dealership fix), as I was recently diagnosed with it (2011 5.7l) and am seeing a lot of the newer tundras and tecomas with it...was only thought to affect older ones (08-14) for a long time, but some are seeing it pop up, again.

If he really bought a new TRD for 34k he should buy one every chance he gets. He could drive them for 2 years and still make a profit. Also, that's easy below invoice and even after hold back the dealership would take a bath at that price. Not saying he didn't buy it for that but I'll give him 3k profit for every one he can get at that price and I'll sell it at a profit to a Toyota dealership that I used to work at.

Murfreesboro Toyota in TN has several TRDs on their website for 34k.

Someone already pointed out that fact, above. I was thinking about the TRD PRO, which is a good bit higher, and harder to find.
