Well, we have been limping along on an undersized unit for our house since we bought it. With it getting hot, it is either time for a tune up or time for a new one. Anyone got a recommendation for someone in the Chelsea area?

You may have picked the worst stretch of days to be shopping for a new a/c unit. Heat Index in the 100's till Tuesday.

I recommend folks to turn their thermostats fan switch from auto to on this weekend if you think you may be a little low on freon...ymmv

Most of us are smart enough to address this situation before it gets summertime.

Actually people like you are in the minority.

It blew my mind during the midst of the first hot spell how many people would call demanding service right away on a unit they knew have had problems every summer or wasnt cooling good leading up to that summer.

I know at this point alot of companies are 2 weeks out on installs...while installing 3 units a day.

Well, I typically don’t fix if it isn’t broken. It has been cooling fine but when I got home yesterday, it was 78 and the unit had been running non stop. So......time to see what we can do

Thanks to everyone else with the helpful responses

Well, no luck with Johnny(he called me back today though) or another guy(they were a bit far) so had someone come out yesterday and look at unit. Capacitor was blown. Guy changed it out and it started running. Unfortunately, he didn’t check refrigerant levels(I almost told him to but hate telling someone how to do their job). So it started cooling down but now apparently the condenser is froze up. Called the company back and they are supposed to come check and see if they can just bump up coolant level(mine is old R 22).

So, think we are about to have to buy a new unit. Going to check with Johnny and the other guy, who said he could price out a new system.

Any input on brands or brands to avoid?

Sounds like you would need a 4ton unit $3500-5000 depending on the brand and model

You should have just quit after the first portion of the first sentence. grin Trane and American Standard have the best systems out there and it isn't up for much debate.

4 ton is good....but don't be surprised if you see estimates coming in around 7500+
