Anyone know what kind of permits needed to do work on a pond on private property? Trees on the banks are causing it to leak down. Since I'll have to tear it up to remove the trees to fix the leaking, I'd like to enlarge it by about 3x. Currently it is about 1/2 acre in size. Can't seem to find any useful info on the interweb - so was hoping someone here has experience with this and can point me in the right direction.

Shame if ya need a permit to work on your pond. We replaced a friends service pole last week and he had to have the perc test from 16 years ago, luckily he had it put away.

I don't understand how it is that the CORP and DEP should be similar in Alabama and Florida, yet if you want to dig a pond in a wetland area in Florida it is almost impossible to get a legal permit, yet in Alabama I see them built all the time with no problem.

If it's wet would probably be a good place to start 😀

Types of vegetation, types of soil, even oxidation indicators on tiny roots. They have a long list of nit picking indicators. Of course it all depends on who it is that owns the property and what they want to do with it. Across from the Wal Mart west of Santa Rosa the Murphy Oil is sitting in a wet pond, the Publix development at Freeport had a lot of black gum and cypress pond area. I have heard that the CORP is getting their wings clipped a bit soon.

Google wetlands mapper and you can get the govt site that will tell you. It’s easy to navigate so even you Alabama guys can probably figure it out.

I’d like to find some one to do pond work in central al. Someone with a sheeps foot, bentonite clay, and the ability to dig a well.

If its not connected to a stream then hire someone and go to work. Let the folks doin the work worry about that. Or do it yourself. I wouldn't get a permit unless your in city limits with nosey vehicles passin by. Even then you only have to worry about an inspector drivin by and seeing equipment.

make sure they include the words "and to comply with all applicable ordinances and codes" in the contract then it's the contractors problem and not yours to worry about

You're using unauthorized common sense. The government defines a wetland totally different, and being wet is irrelevant.

If the EPA gets involved, no amount of contractual language is going to save you the massive headache.
