Saw the first Dunstan chestnut trees had arrived at Birmingham area wal marts today. I was impressed with the size of some of them for the price. There were at least half of the shipment that were 8 to 9 and a half feet tall. The others were 5 to 6 foot.

If y'all want some of the best quality plants in the southeast, check out the plant sale at the Mobile Botanical Gardens. I'm about to drive over there and load up.

Bhamfred they were all $49 either 5 gal or 7 gallon. I opened the shipping box and grabbed the biggest of the 7 gallons. They did not have any persimmon unless they had them in back and not put them out yet. They did have the late dropping pears for the same price. They were 5-6 ft tall.
I already have about 8 chinese chestnuts I put out last year and was not planning on buying any more chestnuts until i saw these. They have a totally different look as far as bark and look as if they have been heavily pruned and trained since small. These are almost perfectly straight stalks where the chinese ones I got from a couple of different places are sorta crooked stalks with lots of forks.

I've been planting Dunstan Chestnuts for several years, those trees will produce next year. I just looked at my older ones, they are just starting to leaf out.

$49 seems kinda steep. Is that the going rate?

So they produce quickly and deer like the chestnuts? Good to know. May have to plant some of those. Looking for something else to plant that I won't have to wait decades to produce like my late drop and regular live oaks.

Keifer pears and sawtooth oaks produce in a couple of years. Bigger trees at planting = quicker produce

Usually $20 or $42 depending on size but they were out of just about everything. I got a few satsumas. Woman said the best time to go is when they first open Thursday evening

Tree prices are all over the board depending on what it is and who you buy from... the chinese chestnut that lowes and home depot sold were 3 gallon ,4-5 ft tall and $35-39 last yr. You can order anything from bulk 18" or less seedlings for as little as $2 each. You dont see any dunstans for sale locally and especially not at this size. Id rather pay $50 for one to produce in a couple of years vs a $2 seedling and it take 4 or more years.

FYI the Walmart in Cullman on 157 has about 25 on clearance for $20. Also a few of the pear trees. All about 8ft tall.
