Did we vote for Republicans or Democrats last year? They all want to put a 12 to 20 cent tax on gas. As long as I can remember we have been told our roads are crumbling and our bridges are collapsing. Alot of rhetoric is being spewed out to support a tax that we won't see the benefit from. It will also be indexed according to pricing in other states.

It be's that way sometimes.

You could give the bastard politicians all the money in the world and it still wouldn't be enough.

Talk show this morning said they were robbing the road fund already to put in judiciary funds. I’m not a Bama resident anymore but they should come clean on that before taxing again. Guy on the radio said they took 63 million out. That would fix a bunch of pot holes

Jim Zeigler has a great plan that puts all gas tax money back where it goes and stops paying for everything else other than the roads its supposed to be paying for

$65M pulled out of Transportation to pay for Public Safety- mainly for State Troopers, etc due to their chronic underfunding. Roads and bridges are expensive to build- I’m auditing some utility work that goes in conjunction with road improvements- it’s shockingly expensive.

Alabama is a low tax state but eventually infrastructure has to be funded and $65M put back in is a drop in the bucket based on our current needs. I hate to admit it but it’s probably time for a gas tax increase.

Never understood that sentiment. If something is going to be legal, why should it be taxed highly? I think alcohol tax in Alabama is BS and taxes “immortality”.
Why not make it legal and just tax it like we tax other things? High taxes are never desirable to a conservative.

There was a good documentary on casinos in Mississippi. The areas with them are as bad as they've ever been. Just another example of how money doesn't fix societal problems. I'm not against casinos or lottery, per se, but it won't fix a thing, that much is certain.

There’s a loss in gas tax revenue over the last 10 years. More electric cars, and more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The fuel efficiency standards have really done the most damage. A Chevrolet Z71 used to get 14-16 mpg, and nowadays they’re pushing 18-20. If you’re paying the tax per gallon, but driving more miles on the one gallon it doesn’t take a math expert to know it’s a shortfall.

But, our roads sucked before all that, so I wouldn’t expect anything spectacular if it passed.

Gas went up about 20 cents in a matter of hours today. That’s a no for me on a new tax. When this state decides to start paying its workers better then just maybe but probably still a no. I’ll be for a tax increase when they can learn to manage a budget.

I saw The Tax Foundation list as well and it’s just a look at rates. Way more goes into funding than just the rate- how Alabama calculates personal taxable income is virtually unheard of- point being the rate is only part of the story. A list of rates is too simplified when it comes to taxes.
