If you move away from the AR platform, I would suggest the Marlin 336 in 30/30.

I have ARs in 223/555, 6.8spc, 6.5grendel and 7.62x39. Also have an AR10 in 6.5 creedmoor. The creedmoor is extremely accurate and deadly. Just need a pack mule to carry it around. I have killed deer with both the Grendel and the 6.8spc. The farthest one ran was about 60 yds. I also killed a few hogs with the 6.8. Did a good job on hogs. The 7.62x39 was built mainly for hogs but I'm also using it as my woods gun. I haven't had the opportunity to kill anything with it yet. The 6.8spc with 115gr fusions and the 6.5grendel with 120gr fusions are bad news for deer. Best part about an AR is you can build it the way you want it. If you like lite rifles, you can build them lite. If you like a heavier rifle, you can put the heavier barrel on it. And it's fun to build one.

300 blackout to 200 yards.
Personally I don’t think the 6.5 Grendel does anything the blackout doesn’t. So it’s a coin flip between those two. I just prefer blackout, with Barnes 110gr tac-tx. It’s actually all I’ve hunted with this year (haven’t needed longer range in my hunts).
I zero at 77 yards. Between 30-130 I’m +/- 1”. -2” at 150. -4” at 175. -7” at 200. I hold elevation when hunting, dial it when at the range.

A 6.5 Grendel is a deer killing machine. I've got one with a 20 inch carbon wrapped heavy contour barrel that is under 8 lbs. scoped and loaded. With a 120 gr Barnes TSX is a deadly combo.
Had a young lady who had never shot a long gun kill 2 deer with mine this weekend.

Nobody ever mentions the AR in 7.62x39. Same lower as an AR-15. So you could have 2 uppers and one lower and basically have 2 different rifles. I've never understood why the 300 Blackout is a superior round to the Russian.
If I am not mistaken it has been proven shooting a CZ bolt gun chambered in 7.62x39 that the round can be and is very accurate when shot with something other than an AK. The tapered case of a 7.62x39 feeds like hammered horsechit in the AR platform. Funky magazines and a 4lb hammer required

I like 300blk or 450 bushmaster in an ar15. If you want something cheap to shoot and hunt with outside of an ar15 the ruger american ranch in 7.62x39 has been good to me. Would you be interested in trading that Ruger American Ranch for a brand new Mossberg MVP Patrol in .308? Never been fired.

Yea,the 450 would fit my woods hunting style a lot more. I've considered an upper several times, and might someday. If I wanted a general purpose deer rifle for longer range then I would pick the 308.
