Do yal think 150gr Remington core lokt will be ok from 30-200 yards.i know buy a smaller caliber but its what i got.

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 10:45 AM

Well, yeah. The 7 mag is a great all around cartridge and as long as you don't shoot it in a light gun the recoil isn't any different than a 30.06 that I can tell.

Recoil is no problem it has a muzzle brake. Last year i shot Barnes tsx but didn't kill a deer with it.but im looking for a cheaper bullet.iwas seeing if anybody had any experience with the 150gr core lokt

Man all I use in my 7mm rem mag is 150 grain core lokts. They are great, no bs tips just good ole soft points. Made the longest shot in my life last season on the buck in my avatar. 350+ yards with the exact bullet you mentioned. Aimed a little high and let it fly. Heart shot ran 10'yards maybe.

I've said it time and time again the Core Lokt is one of the most underrated bullets out there. If you can shoot it will kill.

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 11:32 AM

I've shot some under 50 yards with Core Lokt and the bullet didn't exit. There was no blood trail but it didn't matter since they all fell within sight.

Im a front shoulder shooter. I like drt

Hmm that's strange (not exiting at only 50 yards) but guess it didn't matter like you said! I've killed deer with them and didn't much of a blood trail but they were always so close from where I hit them. Then other times it looks like the deer is dragging full paint buckets behind em. Either way the bullet has never failed me. All my pa ever used too. Hehe he's still got some or the Remington soft points before core lokts, from the early 80's he shoots. Pretty cheap too. Another good soft tip bullet is Winchester super X

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 12:42 PM

I shot one running at about 25 yards that I would have sworn was a nearly perfect broadside. There was one hole in the rib cage and no exit. When I dressed the deer I found nearly half the bullet below the back knee joint just under the skin.

I've also shot them broadside with a big exit and DRT. Even the above experience and a couple others have never shied me away from shooting them. I might however pick a Fusion as an alternative fairly inexpensive bullet.

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 01:14 PM

If u didn't kill a deer u should have plenty of ammo left?..There's probably been more deer killed in Alabama with core lokts than anything else. But I'm not shooting them out of my guns, majority I've seen in the boxes already look like they've killed deer lol! The lead tips are already smashed & deformed...

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 01:22 PM

I tried the 150 core lokts in my 7 mag and never could get them to shoot good at all in it. I was shooting at a paper plate at about 75 yards and they were hitting all over the place. I switched to hand loaded 140 Accubonds and now at 100 yards a 3 shot group will all be touching. The other day on midwayusa they had 160 Accubonds in 7 mag on sale for $30 a box if that's something you'd be interested in.

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 02:09 PM

I just want something that's gonna be fine on shoulder shots and close range. I hunt public land so my shots usaly ain't far.just don't care for 54 dollars a box but want a bullet i can trust
Posted By: Bamabucks14

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 02:18 PM

I still suggest core lokts or Winchester super x! Maybe try the 175 grains

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 04:03 PM

What do yal think about the Barnes tsx hollow points at close range. Will it open good. Meat loss ain't a real big concern. I want drt are a good blood trail.

I'm sure it will work but wouldn't a bonded bullet be cheaper? Honestly I don't know of any factory loaded 7mm Rem mag that won't kill a deer grave yard dead if you hit him in the vitals.

Re: 7mag - 11/05/14 07:03 PM

If it was me and I wanted something along the lines of a core lokt I would definently look at the 150 grain federal soft points in the blue box. I have read that quite a few people like them a lot.

Don't over think it buddy. It will be fine. Set scope 1.5 inch high at 100 yards, and from zero to 300 yards just put it behind it's shoulder and squeeze it off. You will be just fine thumbup

Yeah DW i think my problem is over thinking it.I've always shot a 30-06 with core lokt's.but heard so much about 7mags not expanding at close ranges. Just dont wanna take a chance at losing a deer if i can help it

You aren't going to have any problem with no expansion unless you shoot full metal jacket which isn't legal to hunt with anyway. You might get too much expansion with a blown up bullet at close range but it will still kill it dead.

A bullet doesn't go too fast to expand.

I shot them a few years ago. They left large exit wounds and great blood trails.

I've shot the 154gr and the 139gr Hornady but prefer the 139. For me the 139 is a little more accurate for some reason.

Re: 7mag - 11/07/14 01:23 PM

I might try the hornady's if i can find them. I was looking at the sst but haven't heard much about them

Re: 7mag - 11/07/14 01:38 PM

As RH said, speed causes bullets to expand. Close range and high speed can cause some bullets to over expand and not penetrate as well. Light for caliber bullets tend to expand better than heavy for caliber bullets.
Ballistic tips are better suited for long range or slower cartridges.

2 years ago I had two failure to fires on core lokts out of two different batches. One was just a doe but the other was a monster 8, he heard the click and was gone...switched to Hornady American Whitetail and haven't looked back

Marks currently has them in 7 mag. Simmons did also at one point this summer. The other usual suspects don't (Bass Pro, Academy, Dick)

Re: 7mag - 11/07/14 08:26 PM

For people always talking bad about 7mags you sure can't find shells for them. I looked after work at a few places and all i found was core lokt.power points.and federal blue box.im gonna see how these Barnes group tomorrow. If all goes well ill just half to get another box of them from bass pro and see how they do on deer

Well my rifle don't like 150 or 175 federal fusion and didn't really care for the Barnes tsx.

Core lokts or Winchester super x I'm sticking behind em, give them a try!

Re: 7mag - 11/14/14 04:49 PM

If you handload the Nosler 140 E-tip is a really good bullet for 7mm. I used it out to 500 yards with a 7mm STW with great results~
Posted By: deerkiller24

Re: 7mag - 11/14/14 05:02 PM

I don't handload but wish i could. I just need a bullet that works good from 0-200 yards that's about as long as shot i have on a wma
Posted By: shooters

Re: 7mag - 11/14/14 05:21 PM

I dont know if the Nosler E-Tip is avalible in loaded ammo form. You may want to check their website. Its basicly a Barnes X without a band. I only mention it because you said your gun didnt like Barnes X. I had same issue with my 7mm STW. It would not shot Barnes x BUT would shoot E-Tip at under 1/2 moa.

Well today i bought the 150gr core lokt's and my gun likes them. Thinks for all the info.
