Holographic sights on handguns - 02/08/14 10:00 PM
I do a fair amount of handgun hunting for deer and small game. I use a 6" S&W model 617 22LR for bushytails and, up to a couple years ago, a 9" Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Mag for deer..both with iron sights. I decided to step up to a 8 3/8" S&W 460 XVR 460 Magnum for deer and elk, mostly for the extended range advantage over the 44 and topped it with a 2-6X Bushnell ProHunter scope. The extended eye relief took some getting used to but I got pretty good with it at the range out to 200 yards. However, when I took it to the woods, I had a difficult time picking up deer in the scope and missed a couple of shot opportunities on 2 very nice bucks because I simply could not find them in the scope. I decided to try using it on green fields instead of the woods and had better luck and have taken a couple of does with it but I'm not really a field hunter and prefer to be in the timber so I'm thinking about either going back to iron sights or trying a red dot or holo sight. Anyone on here have any experience with either of those sighting systems on handguns? Would they hold up to the recoil of the 460 Mag? I'm also wondering how my handsome revolver would look wearing one of these sights, and how they would affect the balance and handling. Any feedback or info would be appreciated.
