Holographic sights on handguns - 02/08/14 10:00 PM

I do a fair amount of handgun hunting for deer and small game. I use a 6" S&W model 617 22LR for bushytails and, up to a couple years ago, a 9" Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Mag for deer..both with iron sights. I decided to step up to a 8 3/8" S&W 460 XVR 460 Magnum for deer and elk, mostly for the extended range advantage over the 44 and topped it with a 2-6X Bushnell ProHunter scope. The extended eye relief took some getting used to but I got pretty good with it at the range out to 200 yards. However, when I took it to the woods, I had a difficult time picking up deer in the scope and missed a couple of shot opportunities on 2 very nice bucks because I simply could not find them in the scope. I decided to try using it on green fields instead of the woods and had better luck and have taken a couple of does with it but I'm not really a field hunter and prefer to be in the timber so I'm thinking about either going back to iron sights or trying a red dot or holo sight. Anyone on here have any experience with either of those sighting systems on handguns? Would they hold up to the recoil of the 460 Mag? I'm also wondering how my handsome revolver would look wearing one of these sights, and how they would affect the balance and handling. Any feedback or info would be appreciated.

Never seen one used on a hunting revolver but I know lots of guys that run Trijicon RMRs on 3 gun handguns.

Burris fast fire on Glocks. Cheaper than RMR and have a smaller moa dot it thats important to you

Your problem maybe your scope. I had a Bushnell on my 44 mag and the FOV was not good. I put a Leupold with the same 32mm objective as the Bushnell and it made a world of difference. Did you just want to stay with a wheel gun? A 44 mag was as high as I was going to go in a wheel gun. I didn't see enough benefit for the recoil. I went to a 308 TC Encore. That's what my Leupold is on.

I'm a revolver man through and through. What I love about the 460 Mag is that it generates more energy, velocity, and knock down power at 200 yards than the 44 Mag does coming out at the muzzle, and the felt recoil is no more than a 44. In fact it doesn't kick as hard as my Ruger SRH with hot handloads but it is a heckuva lot louder! I also like that it will also shoot 454 Casull and 45 Colt. My problem very well may be the scope itself. It's the only hardware that I skimped on..the FOV is the problem. I will definately look into the Leupold models..love that brand..all my rifles wear Leupolds. I should have known to go ahead and spring for high quality glass! Thanks for the feedback! Speaking of recoil, I bet that .308 Encore is a handful ain't it?

Look at the 2.5 X 8 X 32mm by Leupold. That's what I have. With a 15" barrel, the 308 isn't bad at all.

I have an RMR on my FN 5.7 and I like it.

I'm not familiar with the Trijicon RMR..the sight I had in mind was one of the EOTech holographic sights. Anybody have any experience with those? They look great on AR's but don't know how they'd look on a revolver. I already have a Warne rail mounted that would accept it. I guess I'm really trying to decide if a holo sight would be any advantage over a scope for hunting purposes since the holo only provides 1X magnification..

I think the EOTech may be a bit bulky for your application. I'd look into the Trijicon RMR, Burris Fastfire, or Docter sights. They are much more compact.

Thanks for the tip. That's a great looking M29! Love those Performance Center guns! Do you hunt with it? How do you like the sight?
