Scope Update - 01/25/22 01:26 AM

Wanted to report on scope I recently purchased - after sighting in - hunted w it today. Leupold VX6HD 3x18x50 30 mm side focus w fire dot reticle
I May still need to adjust eye peace for clarity - but this is what I see in first evening hunt: nice scope - not as clear Late as what I already have (eye peace or focus knob May take care of this) and it does not bring in as much light. Right now - and This May change if I make the right adjustment if one is available - my meopta and conquest 30mm 56 diameter r clearer and bring in more light late and I like my 50mm victory bettr also. Some folks had said - the new Luepolds Vx5 HD and 6 HD are better than sawarski. Not seeing that yet and I never remember doing anything special out of the box to a scope to make one work right
Guessing I May try to get the equivalent in Meopta r Zeiss if that deal is available - will evaluate this new scope little more

If not - I could change the victory I have on 2506 and put this Leupold on my 2506 and victory on new rifle

Wanted u guys shopping to know

Thanks

I love the old cheap conquest, I havnt had the funds to buy much recently but I've used a couple high dollar Swarovski that were my dad's n can't tell much difference...I guess I'd have to have them side by side tho n I haven't done that

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 02:07 AM

I will say I like Leupold and that's mostly what I buy but they do seem dim almost like looking through brown lens sun glasses compared to alot of scopes but at last light has not caused me any problems on killing deer.ive got to look through alot of scopes standing around sign in board or stomping through the woods killing time between hunts with friends and have had several guys bragging on their scope then I look through it to discover my $300 Nikon is much more clear and bright.

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 02:26 AM

One time I called Leupold technical support asking what the physical difference was between vx6 glass and lower levels like vx3. The guy told me it was the same glass and coatings, just upgraded mag range and scope body quality. I don’t know if he was completely informed but he acted like that was no secret information.

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 02:56 AM

I have a conquest hd5. I cant tell much , if any difference in it and a vortex viper or a bushnell elite, for that matter. The Zeiss might be a little clearer at distance at dark than the bushnell elite but i really think the viper is right there with it. The Zeiss is a $1300 scope. Ive been getting the vipers on sale for $400 or less. I think i have about $200 in my elites each. I sure cant see the Zeiss being worth that much more

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 02:56 AM

My $500 pair of Zeiss binos work well late - my meopta and conquest work equally well late also - but I go to the binos a lot because it is easier late. Here is the kicker - the Leupold I just bought was lagging way behind the $500 pair of binos late. The conquest and Meopta don’t lag behind my binos

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 03:06 AM

Had wondered about vortex JWalker

My meopta was around $800 - very happy w it - my conquest was $1000 - they both work better than Leupold and Nikon I hav had
This Leupold I just bought was very expense - 1750 ish - my cheaper scopes above work bettr

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 04:02 AM

The problem i have to overcome is being able to judge a deer 200yds away on a cloudy evening at last legal minute. My eyes might not be what they used to be either. There has been some evenings this season when i just really needed to be able to see a little better. Im using a set of nikon monarch 3 10x binos. Im thinking about upgrading. I can make the shot but i just cant make a good judgement call. I held off on one i should have shot, i shot one i might should have held off on. I know my eyes arent what they used to be. I just need a little extra help. Im thinking about a set of 12x50 binos, maybe 12x56

This has been the issue I have had for several years now, my eyes. I do not have bad eyes, I just need readers. BUT, try and look through a scope with them on and WOW it will screw your brain up. I have a new Whiskey with illuminated dot ret I like. However, last week about 4:30 is there was a small buck about 100 yards off and I tried to adjust the eye piece to get clarity and it would not adjust enough for me. I will look for a different one next year that has a side focus. My last Weaver Extreme I gave to my son was a damn good scope for $300. Heavy, but good.

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 06:32 PM

My go-to rifle, which is also essentially my truck gun is nothing fancy. Just a Ruger m77. It has a Sightron on it. Couldn't tell you how many deer or whatevers I have killed with it. You can get caught up on glass but beyond being able to see extremely long distances and the contrast being at a level you can see bullet holes in targets at the range.... there just isn't much difference between good/decent scopes to get very worked up over. I don't think a Leupold is a Swaro either but I like my Leupold and they do the job. I like my S&B PMII's on the range. But I don't scoff at my Zeiss scopes or Nightforce just because they are not quite as good.

I don't need any of that to kill a deer. The most useful optics you'll ever buy for hunting.... are a pair of Binoculars. If you have a good pair you don't need to get into splitting hairs on your scope just about anything considered a good scope will get the job done.

Your right and somebody said that on one of my scope info threads - I hav good enough to make it thru legal w what I had - I just wanted to see top of deer head really good at last light

I not mad or bitter - May even keep it

From my past experiences- My gut told me to go w Meopta r Zeiss - i didn’t go w my gut and I am old enough to know bettr 🤣😀

Good binos will always be brighter than a comparable level scope if the objective lens are the same size. Also, if you are doing a brightness comparison between scopes, you need to make sure that you have the power settings the same when comparing. Later it gets the lower the power level you go to in order to enhance light. Example, if you are comparing a 12 power 56MM ziess with the VX6 HD cranked up to 18 power at last light, the ziess will definitely appear brighter and clearer due to the max magnification being lower on the Zeiss. Try comparing the two scopes on the same power and I'll bet that the difference will be negligible between the two.

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 08:02 PM

56 objective / 8 power = 7 exit pupil. This is the max for the human eye and magnification setting you want to shoot in low light. For a 50mm objective it is about 7 power and so forth, whatever math brings you to that 7 exit pupil.

If you've got the scope up on 12 it is actually harder to see the deer in the dark, however the scope's contrast is a huge factor in this as well. Good contrast in an asset.

But none of that will ever get you close to a pair of Binos.

Leupold is the only scope ive had to lose zero. My nephew is sending his back now for the same issue.

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 09:57 PM

Yea - I had it cranked down - I am going to look at eye peace also or eye focus knob and I cleaned lens w scope towel

I need to rejudge what I hav - Zeiss scope to cheap Zeiss binos and reconfirm - to me the meopta and Zeiss scopes followed very closely to what cheap Zeiss binos did
Maybe I was expecting too much - want to double confirm I saw difference in what I had -Vs new - felt positive I did

Want to also make sure the side focus knob is not at 300 yards - I thought we checked that before I left - it was mentioned and not sure it that even makes diff - but most of my shots r 100 yards unless on a road
Thanks guys

Re: Scope Update - 01/25/22 10:25 PM

I have a VX-5 4-20x52 with the FireDot reticle and had the exact same issue that you are having the first time I took it to the range. I only had about 30 minutes that afternoon to sight it in and was extremely disappointed with the clarity and focus.
However, the next time I went out, I had time to make all the fine adjustments and it is very impressive now.
I think you will find the same thing once you have a chance to set it to your eye.

Moral of the story- even expensive scopes need to be setup properly for the individual user or else said user will badmouth the scope. Got it👍🏼

I need to take it and evaluate it again - last time I had it out I forgot my binoculars-. I made some adjustments w the eye focus - the side focus was where it should be. It seemed like it was clearer some what

Re: Scope Update - 02/02/22 11:24 PM

My go to for evening hunting on a greenfield is my 3-15x50 Minox. I have a Zeiss 2-8x42 Duralyt that is my other go to in the evening. But I will say my good ole Nikon Monarch 3-9X40 UCC is pretty darn good in low light.

The biggest difference I have noticed in the more expensive scopes is clarity as the light fades. With my minox, I can zoom right up on a deer and see exactly what it is. If its doe, or a spike or a nice buck.

The Zeiss conquest was I think built by Meopta. It uses Shott glass, which is why its such a good scope.

I need to evaluate the 308 at last light again - work real busy now

I have a minox scope but the eye relief sucks

Re: Scope Update - 02/03/22 07:01 PM

goatkiller is right on. another thing to remember is that as we age, out natural eye's exit pupil shrinks; what used to be clear and a 7 EP at 5 p.m. at 200 yards when we were 40, is no longer a 7 at 70, no matter how bright the same scope at age 40 and age 70.

Re: Scope Update - 02/03/22 09:04 PM

i've had the VX6HD and have several X5HHD's and I couldn't tell any difference in the clarity or low light performance. But you will see a noticeable difference in the price.

Mine is a zx5. I had a different one a za5 I think and they had issues. I sent it back for repair and the scope I got back wasn't mine and had nasty long action ring marks. Mine was on a short action.

So I pitched a fit, and the scope I got for 299 was replaced by one that cost well over $1000. Minox got absolutelyscrewed on the company who assembled the za scopes, nearly all needed warrant work. So they stood behind me very well. First scope I got from amazon. Got the right box and wrong scope. Had to send it back and I made them price match my first one. So it was an ordeal to get the scope I finally got.

That's my problem. I'm 55. So the last half hour looking at everything with the scope.
