350 legend - 01/24/22 12:29 PM

I’ve been looking for a gun for my little boy and this caliber was one that I hadn’t thought of until the salesman at Simmons told me about it. For a youth gun seems to have good range (for a kid), a lot of knockdown power compared to some of the other low recoil calibers, has less recoil than a .243, and ammo and youth model stocks seem to be somewhat available right now. Anybody have any experience with this caliber? How does it compare to a 30-30 with the leveroution ammo?

Search is your friend. There are a couple threads on the 350 legend. Comparable to a 30-30 for like bullet weights. Personally, I look at it as a 100 yard or less round while others seem comfortable out to 200. Ammo seems available and doubt this cartridge will fade away in the foreseeable future given the industry exposure. Also helps 350 Legend is chambered in a variety of firearms: MSR, bolt action, single shot. Recoil is very manageable and would work well for youth and/or those who are recoil conscience.

I’ve read some articles on it, but am looking for personal experience.

I got one I built and love it. It is a killer rough on pigs and deer with the right ammo and optic you can get 200 yards out of it

I can't find one for a decent price anywhere. If you find one let me know first and I'll tell you if it's a good deal. 😁

Re: 350 legend - 01/24/22 04:01 PM

Some kinda karma like timing going on here. I have this to offer..... I built an AR for a kid in 350 and he killed a hog with it this past weekend and the thing went down in a pile. I was impressed about 25 yard shot, drop kicked a sow shooting 170 grain Hornady Whitetail I think. He had been asking his daddy to ask me if I would take them deer hunting and his Dad and I discussed what he needed to shoot. Obviously we breezed right past .243 and onto something that shoots a chunk of lead not the tip of a #243 pencil.

I didn't know what it would do we just gave it a try. No kick hardly his dad had been practicing with him on an AR-15 and he never knew the difference. We could get the stock short where everything fit. It worked out well. It blew a dern hole in the side of that pig I will tell you that it was about 100lb sow.

If you can get over the non-traditional rifle thing which I have a hard time with.... Not sure there is anything better for a kid.

Bear Creek Ballistics puts out a 160 grain bullet for the 350 Legend. Almost identical to a Barnes in the way it expands. Very accurate also. Usually have to get on their email list because they sell out very quick. There are cheaper bullets that perform well also. I limit mine to 100 yds or less. It would probably do fine a little further but there are better suited guns for that. I would highly recommend 350 Legend for a beginner shooter-hunter.

Re: 350 legend - 01/24/22 04:08 PM

The 100 yards isn't a big deal in my mind a kid needs to keep the shots close anyway if they could throw down on something at 150-200 yards then this would not be a conversation.

I might build one for myself I was impressed with the hog kill. If you got woods and hogs and don't have to shoot more than about 100 yards this is right up your alley.

Re: 350 legend - 01/24/22 04:46 PM

I wouldn't have a problem going to 150 with mine but haven't shot it at 200 to check drop and such. My only kill with my AR 350 was lasered at 97 yards and dropped him on the spot.

Ok here’s a question then. Why the 350 legend of the 300 blackout?

Re: 350 legend - 01/24/22 05:58 PM

Bigger holes in stuff. First thing said about the 350 is lack of recoil which is important for the younger set.

Straight walled case vs. bottleneck. Easier to reload and legal in a lot of the black powder/slug only states now allowing straight walled rifle cartridges. 350 legend has better ballistics for similar weight bullets as well.

Re: 350 legend - 01/24/22 09:48 PM

I know ammo seems to be in stock for the 350. Academy had probably 30 boxes last week and so did the gun store.

That was one reason I was looking into getting one.

I have a friend that killed a 240 lbs. 10 point at 232 yds. the 350 legend will flat out kill using the 180 grain Winchester power point. look on facebook at the 350 legend group, has a lot of information.

Re: 350 legend - 01/24/22 11:36 PM

I killed a doe with mine using the Winchester 180 grain load. Piled her up at a little over 80 yards. Lots of blood.

I'm also pretty partial to 300 BO using 110 Gr Nosler Varmageddon. Shot a big boar hog in the PigBrig trap with that load at about 50 yards Saturday morning. Folks with me were pretty impressed with how fast he went down. Mine is the Ruger American with the 16" barrel and has zero recoil.

Re: 350 legend - 01/25/22 01:13 AM

Hunted in Iowa with a guy that had one. From what I saw it was accurate, low recoil and super quiet even with standard loads. Definitely a capable round out to 200. If I had stayed in the state longer it woulda been a spot holder in the safe

Re: 350 legend - 01/25/22 01:40 AM

A guy I hunt with built one for his daughter. He claims if a 30-30 is 150 yard gun then the 350 is a 200 yard gun. He really likes his. But he also built a 6.5 CM, so his opinion is suspect.

My son is 8 and I have him the 350 Ruger Ranch. Gun has good knock down power. I’ve taken it with me several times and no deer has went more than 15 yards. Using 180 grain Winchester. I took my biggest buck with it this season and I find myself carrying it when he don’t go.

Those are sweet little rifles.

Re: 350 legend - 01/25/22 01:08 PM

For reloaders, shares many of the same powder types typically used for reloading heavy pistol calibers (357 mag, 41 or 44 mag, etc). In my case, already had a 4 lb jug of Enforcer which has been my go to powder for both 357 and 44. Worked good with the 165gr FTX and was able to develop a 1" MOA load.

Lil Gun, which is somewhat available, also works for 350 legend and it's big brother 450 bushmaster

Their plan worked on me.
I actually bought up a bunch of ammo, due to it being readily available, before I bought the rifle.

Re: 350 legend - 01/28/22 04:34 AM

The sole purpose of building mine was because ammo was every where for it and for my brothers kids for recoil when they start hunting. Then when I got the gun finished all i could find was winchester 180gr. It shoots them very well with a 100yd zero I let my dad hunt with it and he killed a doe at 75yds she made it about 15yds before she piled up. His shot was through both shoulders. I think if he would have shot behind the shoulder she would have never ran .recoil is tame and ammo is fair priced. Now today I seen some for $27 a box when 6 months ago it was 21. If I run across a bolt gun in that caliber I'd pick it up

Re: 350 legend - 01/28/22 05:43 AM

Prior to the last two years I don't remember seeing much 350 ammo. Seems a clip magazine would be the way to go even on a lever action. That would allow better ammo to be loaded or used instead of round nose ammo.

Prior to the last two years I don't remember seeing much 350 ammo. Seems a clip magazine would be the way to go even on a lever action and this would make it a step above most 30-30's. This would give it a better range than most 30-30 ammo. That would allow better ammo to be loaded or used instead of round nose ammo. Reading up on it shows it can be used where muzzleloaders or slug guns can be used, so seems like Alabama should allow that cartridge on muzzleloader hunts and slug hunts too.

Or like Mississippi where you can use 35 caliber and up in a break open single shot

You didn't see much 350 ammo past a couple of years ago because the cartridge is only 3 years old.

I started buying 180 win, just because I could find it for $17 per box. Cleaned out all the local wall marts before my new upper even arrived, very happy with the purchase but definitely buy 350 mags if it’s in an AR
