6.5PRC

6.5PRC - 12/25/19 06:22 PM

Picked up a Savage High Country in 6.5PRC. Man this thing is sexy. Fluted bolt and barrel and a muzzle break that looks like it came off a Howitzer. When you pull the trigger it goes BOOM and there is no felt recoil. I got it sighted in with the Hornady 143 grain. I think I might try to find the Nosler 120 grain and see how it does. Now to take the muzzle break off and shoot it with the thread protector to see how loud it is. Anybody else picked up one of these rifles. I have a Hawke Endurance 3-12x56 30mm tube on it now. I am thinking of getting a Leupold VX 5HD 3-15x56 with the fire dot and CDS. For now the Hawke works just fine.

I have one in a Ridgeline. Going to the woods for the first time tomorrow. Ordered a set of dies today. I'm shooting EL_X's.

I have the itch for a prc right now. Thinking about selling a 308 to help fund it.

Re: 6.5PRC - 12/26/19 07:51 PM

Can’t decide what rifle I want. Mauser has an m18 that has really good reviews.

Re: 6.5PRC - 12/26/19 10:56 PM

Ya I checked out that M18. I checked out the Browning Hells Canyon and the Savage High Country. I like a tang safety so it was between the Savage and the Browning. I’m happy with my choice. I like Savage. They have always shot good to me. I use my guns. They get muddy, scratched, and a lot of use. The Savage has the coating on the bolt and the barrel so maybe it will hold up. The only thing that I am gonna have to get used to is the 24” barrel.

What is the recoil like on that gun. Been looking at them and can't decide between a 6.5 PRC or a 7mm-08.

Re: 6.5PRC - 01/17/20 11:10 PM

There is no recoil at all and the muzzle break is not bad on the ears.

That sounds good. Without a brake that round should have a little more recoil than a 7mm-08. I was figuring with a brake maybe similar to a .243 from what you said sounds like it may be that or a little less. That round should be a deer killing machine with great penetration. At 300 yards it is faster with more energy than a .270 with better SD.

My 6.5 PRC shooting 100gr ttsx is a laser beam flat out killer and recoil bout like a 22 Mag to me. But I don’t feel recoil while on game

Shot a high country in 300 win mag last weekend. Little recoil. Muzzle blast wasn't bad.

Felt tight, smooth bolt, trigger was crisp.

Only complaint is that it's a bit heavier than I typically like my rifles, but seems great otherwise.

My buddy has one in the 300 and he finally got to shoot it the other day and it grouped very well. And i agree with the weight, i wanted the Hells Canyon or the Savage in 6.5 and i was leaning towards the Savage, but i have enough heavy guns lol........

Re: 6.5PRC - 01/18/20 01:38 PM

I prefer a heavy gun in the 8-9 lb range They have less felt recoil, they are easier to hold steady when shooting. Unless I am going to be carrying it for miles days on end I don't see the benefit of a 6lb gun.

Just put the deposit down on a custom PRC - Defiance action, 22” Proof carbon barrel, Triggertech in a McMillan. Can’t wait to try it out when she’s done.

I went with 24” bartlein barrel on my build 1bamashooter

Re: 6.5PRC - 01/18/20 09:35 PM

Bartlein was my choice if I’d a went steel. What kind of velocities you getting?

Re: 6.5PRC - 01/18/20 10:21 PM

1:7 twist on mine. I’d have to go look at ammo box I loaded and chrono but off memeory I was 37-3800 fps with that 100 ttsx. Few deer I shot with it never moved. Just folded up.

Re: 6.5PRC - 01/18/20 10:22 PM

It shoots the 143 eldx really well. Around 3350ish on its velocity. Very very accurate.

3700 with a TTSX is bad medicine for whitetails

It sure is. I shot a doe at 280 yds dead hold. Never knew what hit her

Re: 6.5PRC - 01/18/20 11:07 PM

When John Gallagher built mine last year he shot speer gold dots and told me that was an underutilized bunting bullet. I have a few boxes on my shelf just never did load them.

Re: 6.5PRC - 01/24/20 08:43 PM

What are yalls thoughts on factory ammo long term. I don't reload as of yet. I almost bought a bergara in 6.5cm but held off thinking the 6.5 prc might be better for long range killability?

Re: 6.5PRC - 01/25/20 02:08 AM

The 143 eldx is a stone cold killa outta the PRC.
