308 ammo preference

308 ammo preference - 12/04/19 01:16 PM

I have shot Hornady for as long as I can remember in normal calibers. Going today to get a scope and ammo. What is a good off the shelf ammo and what grain weight seems to be the best? I am looking into the 150 or 165 range. Thanks.

I personally like 165s out of 308s.

That being said, federal fusion 150gr shoots well in both of my American Rifles.

Looks like 150s is all my locations I can get ammo from on my way home. Wish I could find some old hornady light magnums in 165s.

Typically you'll find the 165/168 grain is the most accurate 30 caliber bullet.
That being said, every gun has a preference and I've known a few that just shoot better with a 150 grain.
Personally I only shoot the 165s in my 308 rifles.

My .308 prefers 150 grain Hornady SST's. Tried both 165s and the 168s in different bullet types but they do not group as well as the 150s. Like I said that is out of my gun, and as someone else already said, every gun has a preference.

Re: 308 ammo preference - 12/04/19 06:58 PM

i got a box of 150 grain corelocks to get my scope sighted in and bought a box of hornady something eldx i think but cant remember. The hornadys shot terrible so i ended up just hunting with the corelocks i had. Shot a decent 6 pointer that year that didnt go but 30 yards. Then walmart had a sale on the corlocks for like $12 something a box. So i stocked up. I dont shoot over a 150 yards so i figured it didnt matter to much.

My Abolt likes 150 fusions. I was going to try the 165's but they didn't have any and the 150's are plenty accurate enough.

I hunt with 2 308 rifles, have had great accuracy with Hornady Customs in 165 grain.

Re: 308 ammo preference - 12/05/19 10:55 PM

My 308 likes everything I load in between 150 - 168 grain bullets. I just loaded 10 rounds of 150 HPBT's and 10 rounds of 125 grain Nosler BT's.

AU338Mag is spot on with the Hornady AMAX bullets. Great bullet for sure.

Every .308 I own groups best with Hornady 168 AMAX in a factory load. Not the cheapest, just the straightest.
