8mm Mauser Ammo - 10/09/19 05:57 AM

Just picked up a Turkish Model 1893 8mm Mauser. Was wondering if anyone shoots anything like this or if anyone has any leads on ammo in Huntsville. I’ve found it online for decent prices. Just thought I’d see if I can buy some in person. Thanks in advance.

I bet Larry's would have ammo for that cartridge.

I doubt you'll find any at Larry's but feel free to look and prove me wrong. I have a Turkish Mauser as well. My dad bought it for me as my first rifle.

I always enjoy going into various sporting goods stores and trying to find 8x57. It's surprisingly rare considering how many rifles that are chambered for it must have been imported through the years. My solution was to start reloading for it.

1893's not as strong as 1898's but you should be fine, have a Smith check headspace.

I've bought all my 8mm ammo online. I haven't been able to find it locally. That being said, I haven't looked real hard either

Larry's has 8mm Mauser (aka 7.92mm and 8x57). Privi Partiszan manufactures it. I shoot 8mm in a 1944 BYF Code (Mauser Mfg) 98K, a 1916 Spandau Gw98, a 1940 DOT Code (Borgiswald Mfg) 98K, and a 1970 Serbian M70. The M70 is scoped, the others are all military configuration. I hand load all for mine and have settled on a very adequate load using 50g of 4350 with a 180g bullet. The Turkish Mausers can be either Ankara mfg (made in Turkey) or any of half a dozen German manufacture with the Turkish stamp. If not worn out they tend to be good shooters. if you can find it there is some steel bullet Turkish ammo around but its hot. Look me up if I can help with the rifle. recommend detail cleaning first.

Get “go” and “no go” gauges to determine appropriate headspace. Many American loads are not true full power. At one time Hornady loaded a 195 gr softpoint that was full power. Norma also loaded two or three different full power loads.
