6.5prc or 6.5x284 - 02/12/19 01:53 AM

So I’m contemplating building another rig. What’s y’all opinions and no I don’t want a creedmoore I’ve got a .260 that fills that bill. This is strictly a just cause I want one deal. I’ve spent some time behind a 6.5x284 but I’ve this new PRC has my attention on paper at least.

I’ve owned both. The 6.5x284 is a smashing round. But I favor my 6.5 prc. I just didn’t like the blind magazine my 284 was built on but it shot very well.

6.5 PRC or .264 Win Mag. Both about 250 FPS faster than the 6.5-.284 with factory ammo, and both have more powder capacity if you reload.

I don't know what kind of number y'all are getting on the PRC reloading but the factory 143 grain load says right at 3,000 fps. A 6.5x284 built on a long action can exceed that but maybe not just depends on the rifle.chamber. I can get an honest 3050 out of mine without loading it really hot and still get some decent barrel life with the load.

The .264 Win Mag and consider a 6.5 SAUM are easy to get to 3200. I shot a lot of 6.5 SAUM years ago before that was ever something you read about on the internet.. ourselves calling it a 6.5 Rocket then. I would do that if I were building a gun from the ground up. It was skint back.

That's cooking with peanut oil...

Yes John built mine off a win model 70 300 wsm action 1:7 twist. The 143 is using 57 gr RL 26 and the 100 ttsx using 58 gr h4350
Recoil is a joke. I watched a doe flop thru scope at 279 yds last Friday. Touch the trigger with the 100ttsx and they gone

Think I saw that up there. I might get them to whip out a barrel for me and tinker with this some I've got a build going and haven't decided on a lot of it.

John has my 264 win mag right now. I had him order a new barrel for it because the factory barrel looked like it was finished with a chainsaw and the best groups I could get was 1" with 130 Accubonds. The ELD's would barely do better than 2" . Hope he gets well soon and can finish it up for me. I want to try RL26 and 143 ELD's and try to get 3200 FPS and good accuracy.

How many rounds u got on it now? I've had a 22-284 and a 6-284 both lost accuracy after 1k which is what I expected but damn barrels are expensive......

Less than 40. I hunt don’t have much time to shoot targets a lot. I just dialed in a few hunting loads and went hunting.

Its easier to get to 3000 fps with the 6.5PRC

I do have the capability of loading my own but don’t really have the time nowadays. I want an honest 3,000fps with 140gr pill using a 24in barrel. I’m very much leaning 6.5prc due to the fact of the coal being less than 3 and no rebated rim.
