I have never killed a deer with a 7.63x39, but killed a truck load with a 44 mag ruger carbine. I traded it and bought a 77/44 and never liked it as good as the auto. I traded the 77, and have regreted it though as it would have been a fine rifle for my boy.

I think my next rifle will be a ruger american in 7.62x39 nd set it up as a truck/tractor gun.

Edited to add: I see in your other post you are looking for 150 yards or less. To me the 44 is done at 100. I have killed them a little further than that, but that bullet is about out of gas at that range.

I'd go with the 762x39. It's faster, flatter, more power, it's just better IMO. Plus cz makes some good rifles. I have a 527 in 223/5.56

I bought the Ruger American 7.62 x 39 last year and so far have killed a pretty decent buck and a hog a month or so ago with it. The round has performed well so far for hunting and it is one hell of a truck gun. I also have shot this rifle more than most because you can get that cheap bulk ammo and go have fun. I feel like it will kill out to 300, but I don't anticipate that kind of shot in most situations where I carry this gun. I have shot from a bench at 250 and it shot well. It is a 1 MOA gun at 100.

I've considered the Ruger several times but never thought I would be happy with the accuracy and range, not that it couldn't kill most any deer I encounter. I like the CZ better.

I think you are contemplating a short light weight woods gun. Whenever I have thought about what would be perfect for me at short range in the woods,I always wanted to get a Kimber Montana in 243-308 and have JES chop the barrel to 18"-20" and bore it to 358 win. That topped with a good 1-6 or 1.5-8x illuminated would be about perfect for me.

I've also wanted to look at the Ruger American 450 Bushmaster for such a rifle on the cheap.

I have the 77/44 and while I like it “OK” it hasn’t grown on me like I expected. It kicks more than I ever thought I would with full house loads and the trigger is really heavy (even for a Ruger). Accuracy seems really dependent on the load. For 75 yards (where you’d really be using it in a brush situation) and in it’s acceptable but this rifle is no tack driver.

With its rifle barrel its a neat way to get velocity out of heavy weight bullets and it really turns the 44 mag into a different catridge. Not a 444, but at least a small step toward that territory.

What I need to do is replace the trigger in mine and maybe it would grow on me.

The 7.62 hits hard out to 150.I've shot 4 deer inside that range,3 between 125-150.All 180-200lbs.Knocked all 4 off their feet. And you hear people say all the time, that the SKS isn't accurate enough to hunt with... rolleyes

Beadlescomb, once I got up off the ground from your backhand I’d tell you these things:

The Ruger American Ranch that takes the Mini-thirty mag, with a low power scope, is hard to put down. It is accurate, light, and works good on game animals within moderate range. They are becoming pretty popular in Texas.

The 77/44 synthetic has some anomalies. Most every one I’ve had or helped folk set up were tack drivers with most ammo but it kicks way more than you would expect. The anomaly presents when guys would get good groups braced or off the bench, but off-hand would miss the target. My best assessment was because of the lower velocity and recoil, the shooter and gun were moving before the bullet exited. I think this (even on the bench) for some folk is why there are mixed reviews on accuracy.

I think the Ruger Ranch is better at the task than the 77/44. I like use a 44 in the deer woods, just not the Ruger.

The plus of the 7.62x39, the Mexicans, Russians, and Chinese will always make sure we have supplies of ammo once the Demoncraps outlaw guns and ammo. The drawback, no powermax ammo for the caliber...Yet.

"If" you could get up

I'd agree with the shooting good off a bench but not while free handing it. That's how my slug gun always seemed to me

Yes, a slug gun could fall into that anomaly and I never looked back in time on that issue until now. I’m finding the closer a hard recoiler is to a minimum of 2000 fps the more It negates the effect.

“If”, I’m an old grandpa now so I’ll afford you the first move, cut your backhand power with a russian technique, then you have to decide how many eyeballs you want me to leave in the sockets. I’m guessing just one so you will still look cool with a parrot on your shoulder?

If you decide on the 44 Mag, I’d suggest the Henry BBS Carbine. It really is a shooter off hand. The 77/357 does not suffer this problem at all, its a dandy loafing rifle.

I always wanted the cz in 7.62x39, just haven't gotten around to buying one yet. I did buy the Ruger in that caliber & put a Leupold 3x7x33 on it. That is a sweet shooting rifle. I also ordered a thousand rds of wolf classic hp's since I have an AR in the same caliber. I had them shipped to my door for about 23.5 per round. I have killed several deer with an sks & this ammo. I have only heard positive things about the cz, I would not hesitate to buy one if the opportunity presents itself.

Ordered a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 for a buddy. He loves that rifle. He's killed a truck load of hogs with it

Would love to have the Ranch Rifle in that cartridge.

Re: Cz 527 7.62x39 carbine vs ruger 77/44 - 10/01/18 01:48 PM

Neither. I'd rather have a .30-30 or .35 Rem for something cheap off the shelf. .45-70 would be ok just overkill. But, I'm into that.

If I was going to look around a bit I'd rather come up with a short bolt gun in .338 Federal or something in .358 Winchester any day over any of these. I like the 18" barrel Model 7 as well.

I know that's not what you asked but having had all these... that's my take on a "woods gun". A BLR takedown in .358 is about as good as it gets for me.

To specifically address your question - Personally I'd rather have a 7.62x39 over the 44 any day if I was going to get around 100 yards or further. I've kilt a pile of deer with both a Ruger mini-thirty and a Ruger 44 carbine. I had a 44 carbine a long time ago and bought another within the last couple years. I do like one. The 44 will grease one up close but at any kind of distance it is not optimal.

Its just hard to beat a 30-30 in about all respects regarding the original discussion and its detours.

My first deer rifle was an SKS. I killed several with it and can't say the round ever failed to perform. But the trigger sucked, the rifle was heavy, and just plain ugly. I now have a ruger 44 mag tube fed semi auto and a 77/44. I absolutely love both of them, I have gotten 5" groups @ 200 yards with the semi auto using hand loads (not that I hunt with it at that range). I regularly get 1-1/2 to 2" groups (@ 100 yards) out of either gun using leverlution ammo.

I have the 77/44 and it groups around 2 inches at 100 yards with cheap Walmart Winchester. I have both wood and synthetic stocks but I don't use the synthetic at all. It's light and points fast. The Tigger isn't terrible on mine but i don't love it either. Up here in bank head it should be great to tote up these hills and hollers. This will be the first year using it in the woods and I can't wait
